Aug. 5, 2003 — The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued Aug. 4 has these announcements:
VIMAS to Sponsor Presentation on the Ecology of St. Croix Salt Pond
The V.I. Marine Advisory Service (VIMAS) on St. Croix will sponsor a presentation by researcher Dr. Elizabeth Gladfelter entitled "Seasonal migration and water-dependency as factors controlling the diversity and abundance of birds at the SEA Southgate Coastal Reserve" at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 6, in Evans Center room 501 on the UVI St. Croix campus. Dr. Gladfelter is one of several scientists from the Woods Hole Ocean Oceanographic Institution of Massachusetts who have been conducting fieldwork at the reserve for the past six months. Her presentation will outline data developed in these studies. The reserve, one of St. Croix's largest salt ponds, lies on the island's northeast shore. Study results will be used to help develop a management guide for the St. Croix Environmental Association which owns the reserve. The presentation is free and open to the public. Members of the St. Croix Chapter of Golden Key to Meet
The next general meeting of the Golden Key International Honor Society, St. Croix campus chapter, will be held from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, in the associate chancellor's conference room on the second floor of the UVI Great House. For more information call 713-9743.
UVI Fall Semester Student Registration and Orientation
St. Thomas Campus Registration and Orientation:
— New Student Registration – 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. August 13
— Late Registration – 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. August 14-15
— New Student Orientation – August 12-17
The deadline for returning students who have already registered to pay tuition and fees is 2 p.m on Aug. 11. After that time, all courses that are not paid for will be deleted from the system. For more information call the registrar's office on the St. Thomas campus at 693-1160.
St. Croix Campus Registration and Orientation:
— New Full-time Student Registration – 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. August 13
— New Non-matriculated Student Registration – 4-6 p.m. August 13
— Late Registration – noon-5 p.m. August 14-15
— New Student Orientation – August 12-17

Internet Registration Continues for Returning UVI Students
Returning UVI students can beat the long lines at registration by registering via the Internet. Fall semester 2003 registration for returning UVI students is now under way online. Links to the secure Web site that students are using for the registration process are available on the UVI home page (click on link at end of article). Students must obtain personal identification numbers from their faculty advisors in order to log on to the registration page.
UVI Registrar Robert Fontaine stresses that enrollment in classes is not guaranteed until payment is made. After registering, students must visit the cashier's offices on either campus to pay tuition and fees. Aug. 11 is the deadline for returning students to pay tuition and fees. Failure to do so will result in the cancellation of classes. For more information call 693-1160 on St. Thomas or 692-4158 on St. Croix.
Faculty Orientation
St. Thomas Campus Faculty Orientation:
— Part-time Faculty – 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. August 11, Room B110
— Full-time Faculty – 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. August 12, Sports and Fitness Center
St. Croix Campus Faculty Orientation:
— Part-time Faculty – 6-8 p.m. August 14, room EC-401
— Full-time Faculty – 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. August 11, room EC-408
UVI Convocations
UVI staff convocations will be held at 8:30 a.m. on August 15. The meetings will be videoconferenced between the Chase Auditorium (room B110) on the St. Thomas campus and the Evans Center Theater (room 401) on the Croix campus.
The faculty convocations will be held later that day at 6 p.m. at the same locations.
Special Courses for Fall 2003 on the St. Thomas Campus
The social sciences division on the St. Thomas campus will offer two additional Virgin Islands history courses for the fall 2003 semester. HIS 342, History of the Virgin Islands, will be offered from 9-11:40 a.m. on Saturdays. One class will be held on the St. Thomas campus and taught by Lesmore Howard. The other class will be held in the office of the UVI Cooperative Extension Service on St. John and taught by Dr. Malik Sekou. For more information about the history courses call 693-1260.
The Humanities Division on the St. Thomas campus offers two "Selected Topics" courses for the fall semester. They are Creative Writing and African Literature. Creative Writing, ENG 465, an online asynchronous distance-learning course, uses the latest edition of a textbook called "3 Genres," by Stephen Minot and online editions of "The Caribbean Writer." Students will write poetry, short fiction and a one-act play and will produce individual, final creative projects in the area of their choosing. This course is three credits and will be taught by Dr. Patricia Harkins-Pierre.
African Literature, ENG 466, will be held from 8:30-9:45 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays and taught by Prof. Gene Emanuel. Registration for new students will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on August 13. Late registration will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on August 14 and 15.
UVI Financial Aid Students Advised to Visit Cashiers' Offices
UVI Students who have registered for the fall 2003 semester and who are receiving financial aid are advised to visit the cashier's office on St. Thomas and St. Croix to accept their charges no later than Aug. 11. The cashier's office on St. Thomas is located in the Chancellor's Building – Quarters B. For more information on St. Thomas, call 693-1437. The cashier's office on St. Croix is located in Evans Center room 134. For information on St. Croix, call to 693-4160. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
