EDUCATION WILL FUND EDUCATION

August 7, 2003 – V.I. Department of Education Human Resource Director Alscess Lewis-Brown has issued a release stating that 25 teachers from each district in the territory will be given free tuition for the cost of a class at the University of the Virgin Islands.
During the upcoming fall semester, qualified teachers will be able to take a three credit non-graduate course for free, Lewis-Brown said in the statement, adding,"In each district, the department will allow five of those teachers to take a three credit graduate level course."
In order to qualify for this program, Lewis-Brown said a teacher should need no more than two further courses to meet the Virgin Islands Board of Education's certification requirements.
The department's statement went on to say that while course tuition will be covered, this program will not pay for course textbooks or other materials, and that a teacher who fails the course will be asked to reimburse the department for the cost of that course.
