V.I. AGENCIES TO GET OVER $12M IN FEDERAL FUNDS

Aug. 7, 2003 – Delegate Donna M. Christensen announced on Thursday the awarding of more than $12 million in federal funding to five V.I. government agencies.
According to a release from Christensen's Washington office:
– The Education Department is to receive nearly $8.2 million from the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services. Through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Christensen said, each state and territory "is provided with funding for population age 3 through 21 who are of the same age as children with disabilities for whom the states ensure the availability of a free appropriate public education." She said 80 percent of the funding goes for that purpose, while 15 percent "is distributed to children in the same age range who are living in poverty."
– The Human Services Department has been awarded $4.1 million from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for Head Start projects, to be expended between Sept. 1 and next Aug. 31. The money represents "a non-competing continuation of a discretionary grant" toward a full year of Head Start operations and training, Christensen said.
– The Planning and Natural Resources Department will receive $50,000 for the territory's Cooperative Fisheries Statistics Program being conducted for the National Marine Fisheries Service. "The objective of this program is to collect bio-statistical data (fish species, weight and length) from select commercial fishers for species-specific information" about local fisheries, the delegate said.
– The Bureau of Economic Research has been approved for $42,000 as an investment in Economic Development Administration continuation planning. "The investment will be used to support the continuation of the bureau's implemented development planning program," Christensen said. The Economic Development Administration, she said, "is committed to the provision of financial assistance to meet the economic development needs of distressed communities throughout the United States."
– The Law Enforcement Planning Commission will receive $15,000 under the 2003 State Challenge Activities Grants Program. The delegate said the program provides incentives for states and territories participating in the federal Formula Grants Program "to develop, adopt and improve programs in one or more of 10 specified programs designed to improve the juvenile justice systems."
