DRIVER CHARGED IN JULY PEDESTRIAN DEATH

Aug. 19, 2003 – Police arrested Paul C. Fahie, 45, an Estate Thomas resident, on Tuesday and charged him with negligent homicide in connection with the death of a woman who was struck by a car on July 27 while trying to cross a roadway.
Authorities said at the time that the impact was so great that Helena David, 57, was flung "a considerable distance away" from the intersection by Addelita Cancryn Junior High School.
A Police Department release issued on Tuesday stated that Fahie allegedly lost control of his vehicle while operating it in a negligent manner in the area of Krum Bay Road. Bail for Fahie was set at $25,000, the release said, and he was unable to post bond and was remanded to the correction facility at the Alexander Farrelly Justice Complex.
On the day after the accident, Sgt. Thomas Hannah, police spokesman, said the driver of the car had stopped at the scene and had spoken with police.
Hannah said at the time that given the distance David's body was thrown, it was likely that "speed was a factor."
David, a Mariendahl resident, was taken by ambulance to Roy L. Schneider Hospital, where she died later the same day.
