LOVE CITY TRIATHLON INVITES ALL ISLANDS' ATHLETES

Aug. 20, 2003 — For the fifth Labor Day in a row, athletes will swim, bike and run their way across St. John in the Love City Triathlon.
The event, organized by the St. John Landsharks, starts at 7 a.m. on Sept. 1.
It begins with a half-mile swim at Big Maho Bay. The 14-mile bike ride follows, running from Big Maho Bay to Cruz Bay along the North Shore Road and from Cruz Bay to Coral Bay along Centerline Road. Competitors will finish up with a four-mile run north along East End Road starting at the Coral Bay fire station.
Participants can compete individually in all events or as part of a relay team. Awards are given in male, female and relay divisions.
The island that has the fastest cumulative time for its top three people gets the interisland award. Louise DePuy, who is the event's chief organizer, said, in order to win the interisland award, the top three people cannot all be of the same sex. For example, it could be two men and a woman or two women and a man.
In 2002, 21 men, six women and eight three-person relay teams competed. David Jones of St. Thomas was the fastest man, with a combined time of 1:40:02. DePuy took the honors for the women with a combined time of 1:49:03.
DePuy said Jones will not compete this year because he moved off-island.
Registration runs $25 through Aug. 25 and $35 from Aug. 26 through Aug. 31. Registration forms are available at Endurance Sports at Sunny Isle Shopping Center on St. Croix, Going Seanile on the Waterfront in St. Thomas or at Connections on St. John. It's also possible to get a form from DePuy by e-mail.
Mail forms with a check made out to St. John Landsharks to Love City Triathlon, attention Kathie McMurtrie, Box 654, St. John, V.I. 00831, or drop off entry form and check at Connections.
Aug. 31 is the final day to register. Participants can register from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 31 at Maho Bay Camps' Pavilion Restaurant. There is no registration on the morning of the event.
All participants must check in at Maho Bay Camps from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 31 to get their numbers and to sign waivers. Participants may stay the night before the event at Maho Bay Camps for free.
Residents of the U.S. Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico receive half off the usual rate for additional nights. Call DePuy at 776-6240 Ext. 211 or email her for more information on Maho Bay Camp stays.
