ST. CROIX NURSING PROGRAM GETS GIFT EQUIPMENT

Aug. 23, 2003 — A sophisticated new medical device, which will provide students with a training tool, has been donated to the University of the Virgin Islands associated degree nursing program on the St. Croix campus.
The Nellcor N-395 Pulse Oximeter, which measures the oxygen content of capillary blood supply, is valued at $4,250. The National Association of Critical Care Nurses, the American Organization of Nurses and Nellcor Corporation teamed up to donate the medical devices to 150 schools of nursing across the United States. Each school will also have access to Nellcor's field-based team of hospital clinical consultants.
"We are pleased that we are one of the few schools chosen to receive the Nellcor N-395 Pulse Oximeter," — a device that would otherwise be unaffordable — said Joan Marsh, chair of the St. Croix campus nursing division.
"The idea is for the students to understand its purpose and how it is used to help the patient," Marsh said. "The hospital has them, but we've never had one before."
Marsh is elated that the students will have the opportunity to learn the benefits and the use of advanced medical technology. The Pulse Oximeter is used in intensive care units and for patients with respiratory or circulatory disorders.
All nursing students on the St. Croix campus will learn to use the device, beginning with freshmen in the Nursing Skills Acquisition class, Marsh said. Students will continue to utilize the machine throughout their nursing education, she noted.
Thankful for the donation, Marsh hopes other medical-supply companies will be encouraged to make similar donations to nursing schools.
