STUDENT CREATES EDUCATION'S THEME FOR THE YEAR

Aug. 29, 2003 — "Creating a Community of Great Thinkers" is the choice from selections submitted by students across the territory for the Education Department's primary statement of the new academic year.
The winning selection was submitted by Merlissa Nicholas, now a seventh-grader at St. Croix's Arthur Richards Junior High School, but a sixth-grader at Eulalie Rivera Elementary School when she submitted the theme.
The theme was chosen by the Education Department's Leadership Team, said a release.
"This year's selection is representative of one of the Department's major goals for the year, said Education Commissioner Noreen Michael in the release. "Teaching our students how to become critical thinkers, and the importance of critical thinking and its application to every day living will be a significant component of the learning process.
"Our students need to be able to think critically about the nature of knowledge, and about the ways in which knowledge is produced and validated."
Michael shared the new theme with administrators at a recent meeting and encouraged them to promote it throughout the various programs and activities during the school year.
