FREE YOUTH SERVICES DIRECTORY AVAILABLE

Sept. 4, 2003 — Sen. Shawn-Michael Malone, who chairs the Senate Committee on Youth and Education, has produced a Youth Services Directory that is available free to the public.
The directory is intended as a resource for parents and guardians "who oftentimes do not know what programs and activities exist in the community for their children," Malone said in a release. But it's also directed toward "independent-minded school-aged children who want to channel their energies into constructive activities to further develop their personal and academic skills," he said.
He said he was motivated to create the directory to help redirect young people from actions leading to violence, teen-age pregnancy and illegal drug use by providing "positive and constructive alternatives."
The territorywide directory covers after-school programs, summer camps, school-year extracurricular activities, the arts, and sports and recreation programs. It has listings of recreation centers and counseling resources and a page of suggested books for youngsters to read, graded from kindergarten through high school.
To obtain a copy of the directory, e-mail your request to Sen. Malone or call his office at 693-3529.
