Nov. 22, 2003 Officials issued a public advisory late Friday warning of sewage outflows from at least three manholes on St. Croix.
The Department of Planning and Natural Resources said it had received reports of effluent escaping from manhole covers on King Cross Street at the intersections of King, Strand and Watergut streets.
"DPNR is advising the public to avoid the areas" where the sewage is escaping and any other areas where overflow is observed, according to a statement sent out a little after 4 p.m.
Water running down to the sea from the Christiansted watershed has apparently invaded damaged sewage lines. Any further rains will prolong the problem.
DPNR warned people to avoid any standing or running water in the areas cited, which could be harmful to health, especially for people with "compromised immune systems."
