Nov. 25, 2003 — The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued Monday has these announcements:

Paradise Jam Continues with Women's Games
Paradise Jam 2003 continues, now that the men's division is finished, with the women's division. It opens on Thursday, Nov. 27, with West Virginia taking on Southwest Missouri in a game that begins at 4:45 p.m. The night's second game, at 7 p.m., pits James Madison against Georgia Tech.
In addition to great basketball action, tournament fans will be treated to a wide variety of half-time activities and entertainment, according to Nels Hawkinson, executive director of the event's organizing company Basketball Travelers, Inc. Hawkinson said half-time fun will include free-throw contests with prizes such as free hotel stays and car rentals, food give-a-ways, and lots of live music, including performances by local school bands.
General admission tickets for V.I. residents are $10 per night. UVI student tickets cost $5 per night. Tickets are available at Modern Music, Parrot Fish, Nisky Pharmacy, The Rack and the UVI Bookstore.
Seminar on "Handling Sexual Harassment"
UVI's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) on St. Croix is conducting two seminars this week. The first, "Motivating Employees: Maximizing Productivity in the Workplace," was scheduled for Monday.
The second seminar is titled "Handling Sexual Harassment in the Workplace." It is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 25. It will be held at the UVI SBDC Training Center located at the Sunshine Mall lower level on St. Croix. Admission is $20. There is free admission for UVI employees and students, and veterans of the U.S. military with valid identification. Refreshments will be served. For details and to pre-register, call 692-5270.
UVI to Close for Thanksgiving, Fortsberg Holidays
UVI will be closed from Thursday, Nov. 27, through Sunday, Nov. 30, in observance of Thanksgiving and Fortsberg/Discovery Day holidays.
UVI Little Theatre to Present "Man Better Man" Nov. 28 through Dec. 1
UVI's Little Theatre's presentation of Errol Hill's musical "Man Better Man" opens for a four-night run on Friday, Nov. 28. For the play, UVI's Little Theatre in the CA Building on the St. Thomas campus will be turned into a small Trinidadian country village circa the late 1960s. Tickets previously purchased for the play (originally scheduled to run Nov. 21-24) will be honored on the corresponding weekday.
Since the postponement has moved the play to Thanksgiving weekend, individuals who wish to return tickets or change days should return to the ticket outlet where purchased. Show time is 8 p.m. each day. Tickets are $6 for students and $12 for general admission. Outlets for tickets are the UVI Humanities Division, the UVI Bookstore, Dockside Bookstore and Nisky Pharmacy. Caribbean Cruise for Two Offered in Tom Joyner Foundation Raffle
UVI, the Tom Joyner Foundation and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines have teamed up to present a Caribbean cruise for two to the winner of a fund-raising raffle now under way. Raffle chances cost $5 per chance or $50 for a book of 11 chances. The raffle will be drawn at the UVI Christmas Concert to be held at 8 p.m. on Dec. 6, in the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. Tickets are available from the office of institutional advancement on the St. Thomas campus, at both UVI Bookstores and from administrative assistants in the various academic divisions.
Participants need not be present to win. Proceeds of the raffle will go toward the UVI Tom Joyner Foundation Scholarship Fund.
CYFAR Invites Public to Closing Ceremonies Set for Dec. 2
The public is invited to closing ceremonies for the Basic Computer Training short course conducted by the UVI Cooperative Extension Service for the Children, Youth and Families At Risk (CYFAR) program. The ceremonies are set for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the CYFAR Computer Lab on the St. Croix campus. Seminar to Focus on Tax Compliance, Record Keeping Set for Dec. 4
The UVI Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will conduct the third in its series of seminars entitled "Checklist for Starting a Business in the Virgin Islands" from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4, at the SBDC training center at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. Presented in collaboration with the V.I. Internal Revenue Bureau, the seminar will focus on tax compliance and record keeping. It is directed at business owners, potential business owners, employees and students. Among topics to be covered are which local and federal taxes you are obligated to pay; how taxes are computed; and how long records must be kept.
Seminar admission is $20. A $5 discount is available those who pre-register. The series is free to veterans of the U.S. military with valid identification, UVI faculty, staff and students. UVI Music Department's 'A Winter Wonderland' Set Dec. 6
The Music Department will present "A Winter Wonderland" at 8 p.m. in the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus on Saturday, Dec. 6.
The concert will showcase the UVI Concert Band, directed by Austin A. Venzen, the UVI Concert Choir, directed by Elvira O. Green, and the UVI Jazz Ensemble, directed by Martin J. Lamkin. Also featured will be the St. Nichols Brass, solos by Malvern V. Gumbs and an appearance by the Leonard Dober Elementary School choirs.
Tickets — $15 for adults and $10 for students — can be purchased at the UVI Bookstore, UVI Humanities Office, Dockside Bookshop and Krystal and Gifts.
VIMAS to Sponsor Seafood Safety Workshop Dec. 9 on St. Croix
A workshop on Seafood Safety is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 9, at the St. Croix Curriculum Center. Sponsored by the V.I. Marine Advisory Service, the session will include information on seafood safety, seafood quality, government regulations regarding seafood safety, ciguatera, histamine poisoning, biotoxins and more. The workshop is designed for anyone who eats or handles seafood. For more information call Marcia Taylor at 692-4046 or Mayra Suarez at 693-1392.
UVI Sets Model Farm Opening Ceremonies for Dec. 14
A public opening ceremony for the UVI Integrated Model Farm Project, originally scheduled for Nov. 16, has been rescheduled for Sunday, Dec. 14. The farm, situated on five acres of land adjacent to the St. Croix campus, was developed by UVI's Agricultural Experiment Station. It includes rainwater collection systems, holding ponds, tanks for raising fish and an irrigation system which uses the effluent from the fish tanks. UVI Professor Dr. James Rakocy, one of the farm's developers, said the model farm represents the best of 30 years of experimentation and work at developing sustainable and economically viable agricultural systems for the Caribbean.
