Nov. 26, 2003 – Following is Gov. Charles W. Turnbull's Thanksgiving message, distributed in a Government House release on Wednesday:
"As we celebrate Thanksgiving Day 2003, let us reflect on the bountiful blessings we have by virtue of living in one of the most beautiful places on the planet. Despite the challenges we face we must remain thankful for the opportunity to live in freedom and enjoy the blessings of liberty as part of our great nation, the United States of America.
"Let us continue to live in unity and harmony and respect the blessings that come from our diversity as we continue to devote our time, energies and talents to enhance the quality of life for all. Let us give thanks to Almighty God for being spared the ravages of hurricanes this past season, and all other natural disasters.
"As the world is challenged by conflicts against terrorists determined to demolish the foundation of freedom, harmony and peace we enjoy as American citizens, our prayers go out to those members of the American armed forces and its allies, including those from the Virgin Islands who are in danger in Iraq, Afghanistan and other parts of the world, who have been called to pay the ultimate sacrifice. Let us remember them and their families during this festive time. Lift them up in your prayers and remember those who have gone before us and worked diligently to secure our place in history and upon whose shoulders we now stand.
"As we thank God for all His blessings, let us remember the poor and less fortunate, and those who have lost a loved one and are grieving. Let us offer prayers of solace and peace for those persons left to mourn. As we sit with family and friends to share a meal, remember those who are needy. Share your bounty and invite a neighbor or someone alone to join in the thanksgiving meal. Thanksgiving can be a lonely time and some people experience depression. It is our obligation, as a community and people, to ensure that all partake at the table of well-being and success built from the foundation of our shared community.
"Together, let us continue to build a Virgin Islands of progressive minds and creative achievers who journey through life with the conviction and understanding that we are all interconnected to each other in ways that prevail over our differences. May God bless us all, our families and loved ones during this wonderful time of the year and may our days be filled with good health, love, joy and prosperity. Happy Thanksgiving 2003."
