Nov. 28, 2003 – The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued Nov. 26 has these announcements:
UVI to Close for Thanksgiving, Fortsberg Holidays
Happy Thanksgiving to the entire UVI Community. UVI is closed from Thursday, Nov. 27, through Sunday, Nov. 30, in observance of Thanksgiving and Fortsberg/ Discovery Day holidays.
Paradise Jam Women's Division Began Thanksgiving Day
Paradise Jam 2003 continued on Thanksgiving Day with the opening round of the eight-team women's division. West Virginia took on Southwest Missouri in a game that begins at 4:45, and James Madison played Georgia Tech at 7 p.m.
Four games are set for Friday, Nov. 28. Games are scheduled at 2:30, 4:45, 7 and 9:15 p.m. The final four match-ups, including the championship, are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 29. Games begin at 2:30 p.m. and the championship contest is scheduled for 9:15 p.m. The full schedule is available on the UVI web site.
Along with the great basketball action — the men's championship came down to a last-second three-pointer that could have tied the game — halftime fun will continue to include give-aways of food and prizes, as well as contests and entertainment. General admission tickets for Virgin Islands residents are $10 per night. UVI student tickets cost $5 per night. Tickets are available at Modern Music, Parrot Fish, Nisky Pharmacy, The Rack and the UVI Bookstore.
UVI Little Theatre to Present "Man Better Man" Nov. 28-Dec. 1
UVI's Little Theatre's presentation of Errol Hill's musical "Man Better Man" opens for a four-night run on Friday, Nov. 28. For the play, UVI's Little Theatre in the CA Building on the St. Thomas campus will be turned into a small, Trinidadian country village circa the late 1960s. Tickets previously purchased for the play (which was originally scheduled to run from Nov. 21-24) will be honored on the corresponding weekday. Since the postponement has moved the play to Thanksgiving weekend, individuals who wish to return tickets or change days should return to the ticket outlet where purchased. Show time is 8 p.m. each day. Tickets are $6 for students and $12 for general admission. Outlets for tickets are the UVI Humanities Division, the UVI Bookstore, Dockside Bookstore and Nisky Pharmacy. Caribbean Cruise for Two Offered in Tom Joyner Foundation Raffle
UVI, the Tom Joyner Foundation and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines have teamed up to present a Caribbean cruise for two to the winner of a fund-raising raffle now under way. Raffle chances cost $5 per chance or $50 for a book of 11 chances. The raffle will be drawn at the UVI Christmas Concert (see item below) to be held at 8 p.m. Dec. 6, in the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. Tickets are available from the office of Institutional Advancement on the St. Thomas at both UVI Bookstores and from administrative assistants in the various academic divisions.
Participants need not be present to win. Proceeds of the raffle will go toward the UVI Tom Joyner Foundation Scholarship Fund.
Crop Production Short Course Plans Closing Ceremony on St. Croix on Dec. 1
UVI's Cooperative Extension Service invites the public to a closing program for the Agriculture and Natural Resources Program Crop Production short course. The session will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, in the UVI Research and Extension Center, Room 133 on the St. Croix campus. CYFAR Invites Public to Closing Ceremonies Set for Dec. 2
The public is invited to closing ceremonies for the Basic Computer Training short course conducted by the UVI Cooperative Extension Service for the Children, Youth and Families At Risk (CYFAR) program. The ceremonies are set for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the CYFAR Computer Lab on the St. Croix campus. UVI-SBDC Seminar to Focus on Tax Compliance, Record Keeping Set Dec. 4
The UVI Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will conduct the third in its series of seminars entitled "Checklist for Starting a Business in the Virgin Islands" from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at the SBDC training center at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. Presented in collaboration with the Virgin Islands Internal Revenue Bureau, the seminar will focus on tax compliance and record keeping. It is directed at business owners, potential business owners, employees and students. Among topics to be covered are which local and federal taxes you are obligated to pay; how taxes are computed; and how long records must be kept.
Seminar admission is $20. A $5 discount is available those who pre-register. The series is free to veterans of the U.S. military with valid identification, UVI faculty, staff and students. UVI Music Department's "A Winter Wonderland" Set Dec. 6
The Music Department will present "A Winter Wonderland" at 8 p.m. in the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus on Saturday, Dec. 6.
The concert will showcase the UVI Concert Band, directed by Austin A. Venzen; the UVI Concert Choir, directed by Elvira O. Green; and the UVI Jazz Ensemble, directed by Martin J. Lamkin. Also featured will be the St. Nichols Brass, solos by Malvern V. Gumbs and an appearance by the Leonard Dober Elementary School choirs.
Tickets — $15 for adults and $10 for students — can be purchased at the UVI Bookstore, UVI Humanities Office, Dockside Bookshop and Krystal and Gifts.
VIMAS to Sponsor Seafood Safety Workshop Dec. 9 on St. Croix
A workshop on Seafood Safety is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, at the St. Croix Curriculum Center. Sponsored by the V.I. Marine Advisory Service, the session will include information on seafood safety, seafood quality, government regulations regarding seafood safety, ciguatera, histamine poisoning, biotoxins and more. The workshop is designed for anyone who eats or handles seafood. For more information call Marcia Taylor at 692-4046 or Mayra Suarez at 693-1392.
UVI Sets Model Farm Opening Ceremonies for Dec. 14
A public opening ceremony for the UVI Integrated Model Farm Project, originally scheduled for Nov. 16, has been rescheduled for Sunday, Dec. 14. The farm, situated on five acres of land adjacent to the St. Croix campus, was developed by UVI's Agricultural Experiment Station. It includes rainwater collection systems, holding ponds, tanks for raising fish and an irrigation system which uses the effluent from the fish tanks. UVI Professor Dr. James Rakocy, one of the farm's developers, said the model farm represents the best of 30 years of experimentation and work at developing sustainable and economically viable agricultural systems for the Caribbean. Family Life Center Book Drive Set for Dec. 15
The UVI Family Life Center (FLC) on the St. Thomas campus is conducting a book drive to procure reading books for children in the program. The goal is to give each child in the UVI-FLC program at least one book to take home to read over the holidays. Children in the program attend the M. J. Kirwan Elementary School. New and used books are welcome. They should be appropriate for children age nine through 12. The deadline for collection is Dec. 15. Book drop-off points are: the Ralph Paiewonsky Library, the president's office, the Bookstore, the chancellor's office, the physical plant, the food pavilion, the admissions office, and the nurse's office.
