THE SAFETY ZONE HAS OPENED A RESALE SHOP

Dec. 2, 2003 – Shopping on St. John took on a new dimension when The Safety Zone opened The Phoenix on Monday. The store, tucked in behind Santo's Laundry on Route 104, carries gently used furniture, clothing, accessories and other merchandise.
The store is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. It provides an affordable alternative for shoppers, a tax write-off for folks who donate items and a way to raise money for The Safety Zone.
"It's a win-win situation," The Safety Zone's executive director, Iris Kern, said on Tuesday.
The Phoenix carries merchandise of the sort you'd find in a consignment shop, as opposed to a yard sale, Kern said. The stock includes several evening dresses perfect for holiday parties, she said, as well as a selection of other women's and men's clothing.
The average clothing is priced $20 to $25, Kern said. "The most expensive item is a patterned sequined top for $50," she said, and the inventory also includes raincoats for men and women priced at $20.
Shoppers will find lots of baby and children's items, including clothing, strollers and playpens and toys. "We have hundreds of stuffed animals," Kern said.
Furniture items include a wine cooler and a well-made rattan sleeper sofa, tagged at $200 each, and a glass-top dining table.
Kern said donations may be dropped off at The Safety Zone office, located up the path near St. John Editions and Margarita's Restaurant. For more information, call the office at 693-7233. The Phoenix has no phone.
