Dec. 7, 2003 — The outlook looks a bit better than it did on Saturday, when forecasters thought the territory would see six to 10 inches of rain. Andy Roche, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in San Juan now predicts that the Virgin Islands will get only about two inches of rain as Tropical Storm Odette passes to the northwest.
He said Sunday morning should see lots of clouds and light showers, with rain possibly getting heavier in the late afternoon.
"Monday will have some showers too," he said.
How much rain the territory gets depends on how a cold front affects Odette, he said. He said the storm is expected to merge with a cold front and become extratropical late Sunday.
The territory will also see blustery winds on Sunday, Roche said, from 20 to 25 mph.
"There's a high-wind advisory," he said.
As of 8 a.m., Odette was centered at latitude 20.3 degrees north and longitude 69.3 degrees west, or 145 miles southeast of Grand Turk Island in the Turks and Caicos. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward 175 miles.
Winds at the storm's center were 45 mph and the system was moving northeast at about 20 mph. The atmospheric pressure at its center stood at 1000 millibars or 29.52 inches of mercury.
