ST. CROIX FIRM FUNDS SCHOLARSHIP FOR 2ND YEAR

Dec. 12, 2003 – The Maguire Group, a Christiansted architectural, engineering and planning firm, has donated its second $2,000 scholarship to support a student pursuing an associate degree in applied sciences on the University of the Virgin Islands St. Croix campus and majoring in process technology.
The scholarship will be awarded during the 2004-05 academic year to a qualified UVI student enrolled in the program. The Maguire Group awarded its first $2,000 scholarship a year ago, for the current academic year.
At a ceremony, Eric Douglas, Maguire Group senior product manager, presented a $2,000 check to UVI's St. Croix campus associate chancellor, Claude Steele; and the university's vice president for institutional advancement, Joseph Boschulte.
To be considered for the Maguire Group Scholarship, an applicant must be a full-time UVI student, reside in the territory, have a grade-point average of at least 3.0, and either be enrolled in the process technology program or be planning to enroll in it.
UVI in conjunction with Hovensa began offering the associate of applied sciences degree in process technology in the fall of 2002 on the St. Croix campus. The program prepares students for employment as technicians in the process fields which include oil production, refining, chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing, power generation, utilities, wastewater treatment and food processing. This program arose out of the need by Hovensa and other industries in the Virgin Islands for skilled operations technicians.
The Maguire Group has been providing engineering services to the Virgin Islands community for more than 20 years, according to the release.
More information about the scholarship may be obtained by calling Ardrina Scott-Elliott, chair of UVI's Scholarship Committee, 693-1096.
