Dec. 13, 2003 – The V.I. Humanities Council is seeking nominations for the recently established Heath Award, which will annually recognize one humanities public school teacher in the St. Thomas-St. John district and another on St. Croix for their accomplishments.
The public is invited to submit nominations. Teachers in kindergarten through 12th grade are eligible for the award, which will honor the recipients for their exceptional ability and dedication to teaching in the humanities fields. Each winner will receive $1,000 and a commemorative plaque.
As defined by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the humanities encompass literature, history, law, philosophy, ethics, comparative religion, archaeology, cultural anthropology, folklife studies, and history and criticism of the arts.
Nominations for the 2004 awards must be submitted in writing by March 15. They should include the teacher's name, school, grade level and academic discipline, the nominator's name, mailing address and relationship to the nominee; and the individual's reasons for nominating the teacher, highlighting his/her achievements.
According to the V.I. Humanities Council Web site, teachers who are nominated will then be sent application forms by the council, a VIHC committee will then review all applications, and the winners will be announced by May 15.
