Dec. 16, 2003 – The International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials and its Virgin Islands chapter have presented the Education Department with 60 copies of the 2003 Uniform Plumbing Code.
The copies will be distributed to the territory's high school vocational education classes to be used as supplements to "training and classroom books and materials donated by the IAPMO during the latter part of the 2002-03 school year," an Education Department release stated. The copies of the code have a total retail value of about $4,500, it said.
"The IAPMO is extremely proud that the Uniform Plumbing Code was selected as the standard of the Virgin Islands," Allen Inlow, the association's chief of field services, said. The donation "makes a grand total of $20,000 worth of contributions made to the schools and students of the Virgin Islands in a two-year period," he said
Education Commissioner Noreen Michael expressed appreciation for the "donations and assistance provided to our students and instructors by the IAPMO." She said the collaborative effort on the part of the association to promote plumbing as a career field "is indicative of good corporate citizenship and the type of relationship" the department would like to develop with other community business organizations.
Inlow said the association is developing another round of continuing education classes for the industry. When plans are finalized, he added, "we will extend an invitation to all plumbing students and instructors to attend."
