EUDORA KEAN FALLS TO NORTHEAST PREP POWERS

Dec. 19, 2003 – Connecticut's Hamden Hall Country Day School Hornets continued their winning ways Friday night as they cruised to victory over the Eudora Kean High School Devil Rays, 57-49, amidst a sparse crowd at the Charlotte Amalie High School gymnasium.
The game was relatively close for the first quarter. Then with two minutes left in the quarter and the game tied at 13, the Hornets went on a 7-0 run to take a 20-13 lead.
The Devil Rays quickly answered with a 12-2 run to start the second quarter and took a three-point lead midway through the quarter. The Devil Rays outscored the Hornets in the quarter by 12 to take a 35-30 halftime lead. Scott Draughn accounted for all of the Hornets scoring in the quarter.
The Hornets defense then clamped down on the Devils Rays in the third quarter, allowing just four points. The Hornets themselves managed to squeeze out just 11 points in the quarter to take a slim two-point lead at 41-39 after three quarters.
The Devils Rays tied the game at 41 early in the final quarter. However, the Hornets' Keivon Jones scored eight points in the quarter as he and Draughn controlled the boards. The Hornets went on to win by eight at 57-49.
"Both teams played well, but we stuck in there and showed fortitude in the end," Hornets head coach David Beckerman said after the game.
The Hornets, hailing from Hamden, Connecticut, record improves to 8-0 for the season. The Hornets won their final six games of last season on the way to winning the New England Prep School Championship and 14 straight when you count this season’s victories.
"We just did not play ball," Devil Rays head coach Joel Fleming said. The Devil Rays fall to 3-1 as they absorb their first lost of the season.
Jones led the Hornets with 18 points as Draughn added 12. Marcus Wellman, whose parents have a home on St. Croix, had eights points. Although Wellman’s family visits its Virgin Islands home several times a year, this was his first trip to St. Thomas. "The only difference I’ve notice is that St. Thomas is more crowded," Wellman noted. "They (St. Croix and St. Thomas) are both beautiful," he added.
Willie Williams had 14 points to lead the Devil Rays. Sheldon Beausoliel and Tyronne Bryan had 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The Hornets will take on the Charlotte Amalie Chicken Hawks Saturday and the Antilles Hurricanes Monday. Both games start at 7:00 p.m.
