Dec. 23, 2003 – Join the Friends of the Elaine Ione Sprauve Library at its annual meeting Jan. 11, 3 p.m. at the library.
"Come to find out what's up with the library, what we've done and what we want to do," said librarian Carol McGuinness.
The event, which includes refreshments, will feature "A Photographic Exhibit – Remarkable Big Trees of Cultural Interest in the USVI" by Robert Nicholls.
Nicholls is an associate professor of education at the University of the Virgin Islands. UVI and the Agriculture Department's Urban Community Forestry Assistance Program are sponsoring the exhibit, which will showcase 30 trees, three of them in St. John: the Mastic Bully Roots at Trunk Bay, the Cinnamon Bay Kapok tree downed in Hurricane Marilyn and the Tamarind at Long Bay.
At the meeting, the Friends will act on nominations to the board of Magda Smith, Jim Provost and Leona Thomas who will replace retiring members Ann Ingham, Myron Allick and Cheryl Boynes Jackson.
Returning board members are McGuinness, Miles Stair, Emily Cena, Rena Dawson, Elmo L. Rabsatt Sr., Chuck Pishko, Andromeada Childs, and Julien Harley.
Officers will be elected at the board's first meeting.
McGuinness credited Ingham, who with her husband Bob are relocating to Washington state, with starting the library's story hour. "Her contributions to this organization are endless," she said.
McGuinness said that the library now has story hour twice a week with Smith, Provost, Vernon Lake, and Lorie Joseph as volunteer readers. Story hour begins at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday and 9 a.m. on Thursday.

In discussing the library's accomplishments during the past year, McGuinness said that the Friends, in conjunction with the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands, sponsored a summer reading program. About 70 children participated.
The Friends also raised money to provide the library with air conditioning. Although the $5,100 raised fell well short of the required $65,000, the Friends will continue its fund-raising for the project.
McGuinness said that the St. John Accommodations Council renewed the library's subscription to the McNaughton Book Plan. The plan provides 120 rental books to the library per year.
The Friends' annual fund-raiser will be held in March. The date has not been set. McGuinness urged Friends to sign up committees to help make the event a success.
