Donastorg wishes the community a happy holiday
ST. THOMAS – Senator Adlah "Foncie" Donastorg delivered a bag of toys to the children at Nana Children's Baby Home on Tuesday.
The senator said his family had picked out gifts for each of the twelve children living at the home.
"I try and do something like this every year," Donastorg said. "We all get so busy and caught up in our own lives during the holidays, but it's important for us all to try and remember those that may not have families, presents and special meals to look forward to."
The children living at the home range in age from 19 months to 13 years old. The gifts were donated by the Senator's campaign committee and the Donastorg Auto Clinic in Nadir.
"We will be back with something special at Easter and plan to make this a regular thing," Donastorg said. "In the future we would also like to donate gifts to the Queen Louise Home for Children on St. Croix."
The senator extended season's greetings to all Virgin Islanders.
"Whether you celebrate Christmas, Kwanzaa, Chanukah or something else, I wish a joyous holiday," he said. "And I hope we can all look toward a more peaceful and productive New Year."
Donastorg said he was especially concerned about the rising tide of violent crimes against women and children.
"It is clear that we as a community need to do a better job of protecting our citizens," he said. "It breaks my heart to see these things in the newspaper almost every day. We must work with law enforcement, the justice system and volunteer organizations to assist victims and to get these criminals off the street. I want to focus more attention on helping to prevent these crimes through education and early intervention."
The senator said that in the New Year he plans to ask the community for their suggestions in regard to resolving the rash of assaults, rapes and domestic disputes.
"We need to understand why and how these things happen as clearly the laws and procedures now in place are not as effective as they need to be," he said. "I can only hope that there are no major incidents over the holidays. It truly saddens me that so many people in this territory are living in fear at what should be a most joyous time of year."
Donastorg said the Finance Committee would resume regular meetings in January.
