Jan. 1, 2004 – Beyond Visions Foundation is conducting a seminar Thursday evening, Jan. 15, on St. Thomas to assist organizations seeking grants. The seminar, aimed at nonprofit groups, will focus on the requirements, research and documentation needed to prepare an grant application, as well as touching on organization development and structure.
Many organizations are not aware of important items such as lead-time required for applications and defining the group's "at risk" populations, according to Beyond Visions' Yvonne Petersen. Granting entitles often require six to eight months lead-time. They may require the by-laws and mission statement of the requesting organization. They are likely to want the names and civic affiliations of board members, and the mechanisms of choosing members and defining board responsibilities.
Foundation trends have changed greatly since 9-11, Petersen said.
Granting agencies will want figures and details of the specific populations served, and definitions of the "at risk" group to be served. Foundations, she noted, have different requirements for "at risk" groups, so a specific statement will be required.
The seminar will address specifics for organizations seeking funds for social, justice, environment, water, forestry, and arts programs. It will cover private foundations and federal grants.
The seminar will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. at Palms Court Harborview. Seating is limited, and pre-registration is required. The cost is $35 prior to Jan. 7, and $45 after Jan. 7. For more information call 715-4790.
