Jan. 5, 2003 — UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts will present a screening of the acclaimed film "Me & Mrs. Jones" on January 31 and February 1 on St. Croix. The screening begins at 7:30 p.m. at the St. Croix Educational Complex. Produced, directed and co-written by Virgin Islander Edward LaBorde Jr., the film enjoyed a sold-out Caribbean premiere at the Reichhold Center on St. Thomas.
The romantic comedy tells the story of Tracy Wainwright, a young, handsome graphic artist at an internet company, who is seduced by Mrs. Jones, the company's no-nonsense CEO. Tracy is lavished with gifts, his career is on the up-swing and life is good. But soon he meets Desiree, the woman of his dreams, and becomes caught in a love triangle with his domineering boss and newly found love. He must ultimately choose one or the other. Or must he?
Tracy is played by Brian White, who has appeared on the television show "The Parkers" and the film "The Matchmaker." Desiree is played by well-known actress Kim Fields, best known for her role in "The Facts of Life" and "Living Single." Mrs. Jones is played by Wanda Christine, who has appeared on the television drama "General Hospital" and "A Family Thing."
LaBorde is excited about the upcoming screening. "I'm really anxious to get the film over to St. Croix," he said. "St. Croix is home, too," said LaBorde, who grew up on St. Croix and St. Thomas. Lew Muckle Elementary was the last school he attended in the V.I. before relocating to New York. LaBorde will be on St. Croix for the screening.
"I expect that people will be wonderfully surprised (by the film)," said Reichhold Center Director David Edgecombe. "The talent of Edward LaBorde is beyond question. He is a film maker with the potential to be recognized around the world."
The film has received positive responses at various film festivals, including the Cannes Film Festival in France, the Get Real Film Festival in Canada and the Urban World Film Festival in New York. LaBorde was especially pleased with the response on St. Thomas. "They (the audience) showed a lot of appreciation," LaBorde said. "People came out and they laughed. It was good. I can't complain at all."
The film is intended for audiences 17 and older.
Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and are available at People's Drugstore, Urban Threadz in Christiansted, Alliance Clothing in Fredericksted, the Reichhold Center Box Office and UVI Bookstore. Student tickets are available only at UVI Bookstore.
Tickets that were purchased for the cancelled November screening will be honored at the January screening.
