Jan. 5, 2004 – As of Monday afternoon, the Lagoon Street pump station in Frederiksted was not functioning, and untreated sewage was flowing into the sea at the town's public beach, according to a release from the Planning and Natural Resources Department.
The pump station's "gravity feed line is still sending sewage to the receiving waters of the Frederiksted public beach," the release stated.
According to the release, department officials advise the public "to avoid the areas around the Lagoon Street gut, Frederiksted public beach and Frederiksted pier."
The release said that "standing or running water in these areas may contain contaminants or pollutants harmful to public health" and that individuals with "compromised immune systems" especially should avoid these locales.
