Jan. 9, 2004 – The winners of the territory's 3rd annual "City of Lights" holiday decorating contest, co-sponsored by the Tourism Department and the Port Authority, were announced on Thursday by Martin Public Relations, the territory's mainland publicity agency.
Judging took place between Nov. 30 and Dec. 19 on St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John, of both residential and business decorations. Entries were judged on design concept, attractiveness and creativity. And the winners, according to a release, were:
St. Thomas
First — Clarice T. Niles, Nadir
Second — Stephen Thompson, Anna's Retreat
Third — Ruth George, Anna's Retreat
Honorable mention — Ismay Frett
St. Croix
First — Lynn Cupid, Hannah's Rest
Second — Agnes Yearwood, Humbug
Third — Warren Newton, Hannah Hill
Honorable mention — Ernest Williams and the Salt River Marina/Columbus Cove restaurant
St. John
First — Carmen Wesselhoft, Enighed
Second — Kenrick and Enid Liburd
Third — Leslie and Elizabeth Bailey
There were no entries from Water Island, the release stated, and winners will receive monetary prizes at a ceremony in the first week of February.
"This was an opportunity for the community to demonstrate the spirit of the holidays and to take pride in their creativity," Tourism Commissioner Pamela Richards said in the release.
