Jan. 13, 2004 – The Artists Association of St. John will host the grand opening of its 3rd annual art show on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. in the upstairs reception room of The Battery in Cruz Bay.
"It's one of the premier art shows in the Caribbean," said Lisa Crumrine, one of the association members involved in organizing the event.
Works by more than 40 artists from St. John and St. Thomas will be displayed through Monday (the Martin Luther King Jr. holidlay). After Friday's opening, hours are noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
Crumrine said works include paintings, sculpture, photography and wood-turning, glass and metal-working objects. All of the pieces are for sale, and 40 percent of the proceeds will go to the association's youth outreach efforts.
Association member Mandy Thody said the money raised will help fund programs that assist young artists with such things as supplies and framing, as well as funding instructors for the organization's ongoing programs. The group also plans to fund an art school scholarship, she said.
Wine, juice, cheese and crackers will be served at the opening. Admission is free.
Sponsors of this year's show are invited to preview the art from 4 to 5 p.m. on Friday.
The AASJ formed three years ago to promote the interests of St. John artists. For more information about the association, visit the St. John Artists Web site, which lists 46 resident artist members and 33 associated members who live elsewhere.
