Jan. 20, 2004 — V.I. track star Laverne Jones, a graduate of the St.Croix Educational Complex High School, was recently honored at the University of Oklahoma for her performance in track and field.
A junior, Jones became the first Sooner woman since 1982 (and the first in NCAA competition) to earn All-American honors in two individual events when she doubled in the 60 meters and 200 meters during the 2003 NCAA Indoor meet. She added a third honor in the 200 during the 2003 NCAA Outdoor meet.
Jones was coached at the ECHS by Devon Peters before attending Barton Community College in Kansas where she also won multiple All-American honors in leading her team to the National Junior College Championships.
The V.I. Track and Field Federation anticipates that Jones, one of the top-ranked sprinters in Central America and the Caribbean, will represent the Virgin Islands in the Athens Olympic Games.
