UVI BULLETIN BOARD

Jan. 22, 2004 – The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued today has these announcements:
NSF Workshops on Proposal Preparation Set Jan. 30-31
UVI faculty and staff on the St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses will have the opportunity to learn about submitting grants to the National Science Foundation from two NSF representatives in workshops scheduled Jan. 30 and 31.
Beverly Sherman, from the NSF electronic proposal, technical reporting and award administration system, Fastlane, and Dr. John Cruickshank, a program officer in the education and human resources directorate, will speak. They will offer a Fastlane demonstration as well as conduct a question-and-answer session about the NSF, its programs, proposal writing tips, and related topics. UVI director of sponsored programs Diana Demers says the workshops will be excellent opportunities for faculty and staff interested in pursuing federal funding.
— On St Croix – the workshop will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 30, in Evans Center room 713.
— On St Thomas – the workshop will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, in Teacher Education room 101.
UVI faculty and staff who can't attend the entire sessions are invited to drop in at any time during the workshop periods. For details contact Demers at 693-1202.
Intramural Men's and Women's Basketball Offered on St. Thomas and St. Croix
UVI is offering an organized basketball program in both men's and women's divisions on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. The program, which is free, will emphasize fun and team sportsmanship.
— On St. Thomas: For details and to sign up, contact Prof. Erik Heikkila at the Sports and Fitness Center Room 227, or call 693-1213. A meeting for team captains is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 23.
— On St. Croix: For details and to sign up contact Prof. Bruce Wray in room MB 106 or call 692-4139. A meeting for team captains is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 23, in MB 106.
Non-Teaching Staff Council Seeks Input on Draft By-laws
The UVI Non-Teaching Staff Council is seeking staff input into the Council's draft by-laws. A copy of the draft by-laws is available on the UVI web site. Links can be found in the "Latest Links" menu and in the "UVI Announcements" section on the UVI home page (link below), or at the direct link.
Forward suggestions to Verna Rivers at her e-mail, or to drop them in suggestion boxes on both campuses. The deadline for suggestions is Jan. 31. The Staff Council will formally adopt the by-laws at its next meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 10. For more information call 693-1111.
UVI Academic Calendar – Graduation Application Deadline is Feb. 6
Feb. 6 is the last day to apply for graduation in May 2004. View the Uvi Academic Calendar.
Prof. Rosalie Dance to Receive Award for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching
Congratulations to UVI Professor Dr. Rosalie Dance on her selection by Quality Education for Minorities Inc. to receive the 2004 Etta Zuber Falconer Award for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching. According to her colleague Dr. Camille McKayle, Dr. Dance is successful because "her work relies on seeing those in the classroom — and beyond — as a community of learners." She "integrates material that puts mathematics in a real world context." Materials developed by Dance are used at UVI and throughout the United States. She has given workshops locally, nationally and internationally.
Jan. 23 Deadline for STARfest 10 Applications
Friday, Jan. 23, is the deadline for applications for participants intending to participate in the annual talent exhibition, STARfest 10, to be performed May 8 and 9 at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. Applications are available at Parrot Fish, Krystal Gifts Galore, the UVI Bookstore and at all Modern Music Stores. For more information call 693-1550.
"Me & Mrs. Jones" St. Croix Screenings Set Jan. 31, Feb. 1
The UVI Reichhold Center for the Arts will present a screening of the acclaimed film "Me & Mrs. Jones" on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 on St. Croix. The screening begins at 7:30 p.m. at the St. Croix Educational Complex.
Reichhold Center Season Tickets Now on Sale
Reichhold Center for the Arts 25th Anniversary season tickets are on sale. The season opens Feb. 28 with a show by legendary soul/R&B artist Jeffrey Osborne. For ticket information call the Reichhold Center Box office at 693-1559.
Seeking Volunteer Cooks for Afternoon on the Green 2004
Volunteer cooks are needed for UVI's Afternoon on the Green. Scheduled for March 14, Afternoon on the Green is UVI's annual food, family and fun "friendraiser." It features foods based on recipes from around the world. Samples of the dishes prepared by volunteers will be sold at the event. Volunteers are also needed to serve at the event. For details call UVI's institutional advancement office at 693-1040. Proceeds from Afternoon on the Green are used to help fund programs and services for UVI students and faculty.
Link Group's Tom Pheil to Address WNET Roundtable Sessions
Tom Pheil of The Link Group, an international marketing research and consulting company headquartered in Atlanta with offices on St. John, will be the featured speaker of The New Image Foundation's WNET Roundtable meetings planned Tuesday, Jan. 27, on St. Thomas and Friday, Jan. 30, on St. Croix. Pheil will speak on how market research is directly tied to customer satisfaction. The St. Thomas session is scheduled for noon to 1:30 p.m. at the UVI-Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Training Facility in Nisky Center. The St. Croix session will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the UVI-SBDC Office in Sunshine Mall.
Pre-registration is $15 or $20 at the door. The events are free to UVI faculty and staff. A light lunch is included. For details call 777-8883.
UVI-CELL Offers Variety of Courses
UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning Center (CELL) offers a variety of courses designed to providing the tools needed for success to individuals pursuing new careers, working to advance in their current professions or to those who simply want to explore a hobby or leisure-time activities. Appraisers and Brokers Prep Course Rescheduled
The preparation course for the Real Estate Appraisers and Brokers Exam has been rescheduled to Feb. 21 on St. Croix. The course is designed to provide appraisers and brokers with in-depth information for the exam. The course will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, in room C-100 (across from the Greathouse) on UVI's St. Croix campus. The fee for the course is $100. The Real Estate Appraisers and Brokers prep course is part of CELL's Real Estate Salesperson course series scheduled on St. Croix during January and February.
CPA Review Course – St. Croix Campus
A CPA Review Course is scheduled on St. Croix beginning Feb. 10. It will provide individuals preparing to take the Certified Public Accountant Examination with a comprehensive review and practical skills.
Date: Feb. 10 – April 24
Time: Tuesday/Thursday 6-8 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m.-noon
Fee: $1,195 (includes four textbooks and software)
Location: Tuesday/Thursday – Melvin Evans Center room 304; Saturday – room Q-100 (across from Nursing Building)
International Computer Driving License (ICDL) – St. Croix Campus
The International Computer Driving License certifica
tion program will be offered on St. Croix beginning Feb. 23. ICDL is a flexible way of learning, testing and certifying computer concepts and skills. Learn Windows, Word, Excel, the Internet, PowerPoint, Basic Information Technology (IT) and Access.
Date: Feb. 23 – May 22
Time: Monday/Wednesday 6-9 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m.-noon
Fee: $395 – four modules/ $595 – seven modules
