Jan. 30, 2004 – Police Chief Novelle Francis said on Friday that he is taking steps to halt drag racing that's been reported in the wee hours of the morning along the highway running from Addelita Cancryn Junior High School to the Pueblo store turnoff.
Sen. Lorraine Berry wrote Francis on Thursday about the problem. She said that Frenchtown, Altona and Contant residents have contacted her expressing "rage" at the situation. She asked Francis to halt the activity.
"The situation is so intense that I envision an accident waiting to happen, either vehicular or confrontational," she said. Berry said the residents are begging for a full-scale hearing.
Francis said the police will enforce speed limits in the area. He said he was not aware of the situation until Berry brought it to his attention but that he has taken immediate steps, alerting the Richard Callwood Command (Zone A) and the traffic division "to make sure of strong enforcement."
Effective this Sunday there will be police presence in the area, he said.
