Feb. 19, 2004 – The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued today has these announcements:
UVI Business Division to Offer Two Accounting Courses Online
The UVI Business Division has announced that two accounting courses — ACC 122 and ACC 221 — will be offered via the Internet during the UVI 2004 summer session. ACC 122 is Introduction to Accounting II and ACC 221 is Intermediate Accounting I. Students interested in taking these courses should call the business division at 693-1300 for more information.
UVI Sets Open House for Potential Students on March 5
UVI has scheduled an open house for prospective students on the St. Thomas campus on Friday, March 5. The open house will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center. Representatives from all academic divisions, admissions, financial aid, housing and other university departments will be available to discuss their offerings. Approximately 200 students are expected to attend.
Some highlights of the day will be face-to-face meetings between students and faculty members, tours, laboratory experiments, displays by the various academic divisions and interactive exercises. Parents are urged to have their children contact school counselors to make sure they can participate in this chance to learn more about UVI.
Applications to UVI will also be accepted during the open house. The deadline for applications for the fall semester is April 30, 2004. For more information call 693-1160.
UVI Plans 'Day At Tutu Park Mall' for March 20
UVI will conduct an informational "Day At Tutu Park Mall" from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 20. University administrators, faculty members and students will be on hand to share a personal snapshot of UVI's numerous academic and special program offerings. Information regarding admissions procedures, financial aid and housing options will also be available. Admissions applications will also be accepted during the day. Carabana Ensemble to Perform 'Nenie Myrah' at Little Theatre on Feb. 20
A performance of the monodrama "Nenie Myrah – The Life of Myrah Keating Smith" will be presented by St. John's Carabana Ensemble Theater on UVI's St. Thomas campus at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20, in the UVI Little Theatre in the CA Building. "Nenie Myrah" tells the story of the accomplishments of renowned Virgin Islander Myrah Keating Smith of St. John. A discussion will follow. The UVI production will be the only St. Thomas presentation of the drama. Contact the Student Activities Office at 693-1111 for more information.
Third UVI-Queen Mary 5K Walk/Run Set March 19 on St. Croix
The Third Annual UVI-Queen Mary 5K Walk/Run — marking UVI Charter Day — is scheduled for Friday, March 19, on St. Croix. Beginning at 6 a.m., the Walk/Run follows a course from Kmart in Frederiksted to the UVI Campus. A breakfast for participants follows. Cost is $12 for students and $15 for others. Participants will receive a T-shirt or neck tote and breakfast. Registration is available in the St. Croix Campus Chancellor's office. For more information call 692-4000 or 692-4110.
Sustainable Agriculture Training Institute Applications Available
Applications are available for enrollment in the Summer 2004 Sustainable Agriculture Training Institute. A total of eight students will be selected to participate in an intensive eight-week training program in agricultural science to be conducted at the Alcorn State University in Mississippi. More information and application forms can be obtained from V.I. Resource Conservation & Development Council Inc. office by calling 692-9632 extension 101. Forms are also available from UVI Cooperative Extension Service Offices as follows: St. Thomas at 693-1080; St. Croix at 692-4071; St. John at 776-6494. All applicants must be U.S.V.I. residents between 18 and 22 years of age who have completed the 12th grade or a GED program. They should also have an interest in studying agricultural science at the post secondary level. The training will be conducted June 7 to July 30, 2004. The application deadline is March 19.
UVI Staff Council to Meet March 9
The next meeting of the UVI Staff Council is scheduled for noon on Tuesday, March 9. All members of the UVI non-teaching staff are encouraged to attend. The meeting will be videoconferenced between Chase Auditorium (Business Education Room 110) on the St. Thomas campus and the Theater (Evans Center Room 401) on the St. Croix campus. SBDC-BIR Seminar on Filing Business Taxes Set for St. John, St. Thomas
A seminar titled "Filing Your 2003 Business Taxes" will be offered by UVI's Small Business Development Center and the V.I. Bureau of Internal Revenue on St. Thomas and St. John. The St. John session is scheduled for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25, in the VI Legislature Conference Room in Cruz Bay. The St. Thomas seminar will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 4, at the UVI-SBDC training facility at Nisky Center. Seminar topics will include: tax changes for 2003, how to compute your taxes, which local and federal taxes apply, how to file your business taxes accurately, how returns are selected for audit. The seminar is free.
