2,000+ THESAURUSES TO BE DISTRIBUTED THIS WEEK

March 2, 2004 — The Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands is pleased to announce the distribution of more than 2,000 thesauruses to seventh-grade students in public elementary schools in St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John. The distribution will occur on St. Thomas on March 3, on St. Croix on March 4, and on St. John on March 5. All the thesauruses are provided through the Margate Friends of the Children Fund at CFVI.
Established in 2002 by Margate Management as a permanent fund at the Community Foundation, the Margate Fund is the manifestation of Margate’s vision and commitment to children in the U.S.V.I., especially those at risk. The fund is based on the premise that every child deserves unconditional love and a world of opportunities. This early commitment to a child complements CFVI’s commitment to early intervention.
Since its creation the Margate Fund has provided close to $30,000 in funding for college scholarships to qualified high school seniors, helped purchase books for public elementary school students, and supported a wide range of after-school programs for children and youth.
The thesaurus project of the Margate Fund is committed to the annual donation and distribution of a thesaurus to every seventh-grade student in the U.S.V.I.'s public schools. A thesaurus is a valuable tool that can help the seventh-grade student expand their vocabulary knowledge and gain a better understanding of word relationships as they prepare for high school and beyond.
Currently there are more than 70 named funds at the Community Foundation. In 2003, CFVI awarded a half million dollars in grants, scholarships and services for nonprofits in the USVI. CFVI also sponsors the Fatherhood Collaborative to focus on the importance of responsible fatherhood and produces the annual Kids Count report on the status of children and families in the U.S.V.I.
Individuals or businesses wishing to know more about CFVI or the funds should call 774-6031.
