Homicides in 2004

Date of death: Jan. 1
Isiah Pereira, 17, died of two stab wounds to the chest, allegedly at the hand of his brother Glenford Prince. Prince was jailed in lieu $600,000 bail after a Jan. 2 advice-of-rights hearing. Police said the brothers argued over residence in the apartment where they both lived with their mother and a sister.

Renerio Rivera, 30, died of injuries after being shot around 9:30 a.m. on St. Thomas. Area residents said they heard at least five shots. The shooting occurred just off the roadway that leads from Julian Jackson Drive into Lindbergh Bay, near the Kirwan Terrace housing community.

Jeffrey Bennett, 15, of Clifton Hill, a night student at Education Complex, was stabbed in the neck and later died at Juan F. Luis Hospital. Bennett was attending a high school dance at Mumbo's, a club near the Five Corners Service Station. Another youth also stabbed, Nathan Torres, was hospitalized in critical condition.

Early in the morning of Feb. 1, a Hispanic male was found stabbed to death in the John Thomas Funeral Home parking lot. The victim was believed to be from the Dominican Republic. Authorities reportedly found his vehicle on the road behind the funeral home and a smashed cellular phone believed to be his on the main Contant road about 300 feet away.

Recently retired Corrections Bureau officer Raymond Jackson, 50, was fatally shot shortly before 10 p.m. outside the Tiger Mini Mart near Island Center by a gunman who appeared silently from behind a building and opened fire, also wounding a teen-ager.

Homicide investigators were attempting on Feb. 19, to identify a black man believed to be in his mid-30s who was shot to death around 8:50 a.m. at a residence in Estate William's Delight. Police said he was shot several times and died at the scene.

Investigating a fire in an abandoned structure, police discovered a badly injured man with extensive burns and slash wounds to the throat. The victim, Alan Testamark, 42, later died at Roy L. Schneider Hospital.

An unidentified 32-year-old man was shot to death at 11:30 p.m. near the Kirwan Terrace housing community and in the vicinity of individuals gambling in the area. Police had not identified the victim pending notification of next of kin.

Francisco Martinez, 44, a fisherman, died of multiple gunshot wounds around 10:15 p.m. outside a friend's Estate La Reine home, where they and another friend had been preparing their day's catch for typically brisk Holy Thursday sales.

The body of Gibson Polydore, 18, of Golden Rock, was found on the grounds of the Harborview public housing community shortly after dawn April 9. He had been shot in the face. Two handguns were found near the body.

Dean Jones, 28, of Concordia Village died after being shot multiple times shortly before 1 a.m. outside the Front Line Night Club in Estate Calquohoun. Witnesses described the assailant as a black man about 4 feet 6 inches who drove off in a white vehicle.

Police Officer Cuthbert Chapman, 43, who was shot April 17 in an attempted robbery of the Wendy's restaurant in Sunny Isle Shopping Center, where he was an off-duty guard, died in a Puerto Rico hospital.

A man not initially identified was fatally shot around 11 p.m. in the parking lot of Cartech Imports and NAPA Auto Supply in Contant. Police responding to 911 calls of gunfire in the area said the man died at the scene of several chest wounds and that he was carrying no identification. On May 11, police said he had been identified as Winston Saddler, 30.

Date of death: May 15
A woman, her 6-week-old son and her boyfriend's brother were shot and killed shortly after noon in Barren Spot in what was described as a domestic violence situation. Police took the woman's boyfriend, Jose Carrillo, a veteran firefighter, into custody as the alleged assailant. The victims were identified as Natasha Cummings, 28, a 6-week-old boy, Tai, and Carrillo's brother, Wayne Walcott.

Police were investigating the shooting death of a man whose body was found with gunshot wounds in Estate Bovoni on the morning of May 24. Area residents told authorities they had heard gunfire around 11 p.m. May 23 but no one reported it to police because, one resident said, "gunfire is so commonplace in our community."

Jahmalie Henry, 19, an Education Complex Vocational School student, was shot dead in the school campus parking lot a little before 3:30 p.m. Police charged a 17-year-old Central High School student with first-degree murder and had in custody a shotgun presumed to be the murder weapon and a .25-caliber pistol.

The body of Rutherfort Prevost, 59, a taxi driver who resided in the Tutu High Rise Apartments, was found in the street next to his taxi van in the area of Building 19. Police said he had been shot twice.

Police found the body of Tomas Melendez Jr., 44, around mid-day of June 28 in the bushes off the side of East Scenic Drive. According to the police report, Melendez had been abducted some 10 hours earlier by armed, masked men who apparently lay in wait for him at a mobile home where they had tied up the occupants.

Marvin Augustin, 21, shot outside the Moonraker Lounge, downtown Christiansted, 2 a.m. on July 12. Crime was caught by security camera. Rahede Teague, 23, Bassin Triangle, Alex Prentice, 20, William's Delight, and Darnel Harvey, 18, Constitution Hill are charged with first-degree murder.

Jamal Chapman, a 21-year-old male resident of Estate St. John, was found near Building 4 of the Nacasio Nico Housing Community, covered in blood, the apparent victim of an ambush-style shooting. Chapman was pronounced dead sometime later at the Juan F. Luis Hospital. As of the time of the report police had neither established a motive, nor found any weapons.

The body of 38-year-old Lawrence Parson, an Estate Brookman resident, was found on a dead-end road on the east end of St. Thomas. He had been shot several times. As of the time of the report police had neither established a motive, nor found any weapons.

Antonia Callwood, 16, a student at Ivanna Eudora Kean High School, died of a gunshot through his neck. A fellow student at the high school, Cyril Gillard Jr., has been charged with murder and is in custody.

The charred remains of a teenager were positively identified as Shama Francis, 19, of St. Croix a day after firefighters found the body in a flaming car near a St. Croix beach.

Tamra Etienne, of Williams Delight, St. Croix, was found dead, from gun shot wounds, on a street near Lionel Roberts Stadium. The police had no suspects or motive.

A 4-year-old child identified as Leon Bowery was shot to death in a spray of gunfire directed at a vehicle parked between Buildings No. 6 a
nd 8 at the Kirwan Terrace Housing Community. Also shot in the incident were a 7-year-old and 26-year-old Clement Connor Jr., who has been charged in connection with a 2002 homicide. No other details were available at the time of the incident.

Orville Ambrose, 32, of St. Thomas was killed, while sitting on the steps of a bar on Goat Street, by a single gun shot. After being shot Ambrose began running towards the Criminal Justice Complex. He was intercepted by an ambulance on its way to the scene. He was taken to Roy L. Schneider Hospital and pronounced dead at 8:25 p.m.

Israel Correa, a 28-year-old Christensted area resident, was found by V.I. Police and emergency personnel early Thursday at the John F. Kennedy Housing Community with fatal gunshot wounds. He died at the scene. According to information provided and witness statements, Correa "was sitting outside in the vicinity of Building 12 with other residents, and, as they proceeded inside, gunshots were heard. Residents went back outside only to find Mr. Correa lying face up on the ground with what appeared to blood about his body and on the ground where he had fallen." Police investigators were working to determine motive and perpetrator.

Ashsha Isaac, 20, of Oswald Harris Court was found dead of a single gunshot wound to the forehead, between buildings 40 and 41 at Oswald Harris Court.

Shawn Alleyne, 19, a resident of Lorraine Village Apartments, Estate Grove Place, was found dead in Estate Smithfield, Frederiksted. He had been shot several times.

Tyrone Knight, a 29-year-old male, was shot dead when several other males arrived at a service station in the Sunny Isles area and opened fire. Four others were wounded.

Police reported a stabbing to death of Denroy Corbett, a 15-year-old boy, who was watching a game of dominoes near Anna's Retreat. The perpetrator, Joseph Wilkensen, threw rocks through windows, tried carjacking a vehicle and wounded two other people before being killed himself by police.

Police reported finding Tyre Wilkes, 28, in Pearson's Gardens, dead from gunshot wounds. He was identified as having been wounded in the leg at the Nov. 3 shooting incident on St. Croix which claimed one life.

Dixon Lewis, 28, of the Mount Pleasant area, reportedly was standing in front of his home when hit by several shots fired from a passing vehicle about 9 p.m. Police had no motive for the shooting.

Jamal Walters, 19, was found dead from gunshot wounds on a residential street in Castle Coakley village. A second victim was wounded in the knee and treated at the hospital.

The body of David Geiger burned beyond recognition was found at his Grunwald home after a fire was reported at the residence. An autopsy revealed he died of blunt force head trauma.
He was 44. His son Nathan was also seriously injured in the incident.

Date of Death: Nov. 5
An unidentified man was shot and killed as he slept in his vehicle in Estate Tutu. Another man, also asleep in the vehicle, was shot, but not seriously injured in the same incident.
