July 24, 2004 – The cool place for adults to be these last Friday and Saturday evenings in July on St. Croix is the Caribbean Community Theatre.
The summer productions of the CCT this year are different. They are not your regular run-of-the-mill community theater productions.
The summer season started in late June with "Cheatin'" and Friday, July 23, was opening night for "What The Butler Saw." These are adult comedies that make you think and, in turn, make the humor sweeter. The final summer production will be "Real Women Have Curves." This award winning play by Josefina Lopez and directed here by Marsha Munchez will be produced Sept. 10, 11, 17,18 and 19.
The troupe is advertising "Wanted: Full Figured Female Actresses Ages 18 & Up" to audition July 26 and 27 at 7 p.m.
The performance by Charles Braslow as the lunatic government inspector in itself makes seeing "What the Butler Saw" worthwhile. One has to wonder where he got the talent to play a lunatic so well. His hair is great.
Another good bit of casting was Bill Gibbons as the police sergeant. He seemed to stumble a couple times on his line during opening night, but when he was on, he was very good.
Maybe the performer's timing was off just a bit or it could have been this viewer was a little slow. Sometimes, I didn't catch up to the humorousness in a line until the performers had already moved on to something else.
All performers did a good job of keeping the madcap nature of the ongoing antics rolling.
Adding to the pleasure of an evening at the CCT is the outdoor bar where drinks and other refreshments can be enjoyed during intermission.
For those who cannot make an 8 p.m. performance, CCT offers a matinee of "What the Butler Saw" on Aug. 1 at 4 p.m. at the theater at 18 Estate Orange Grove.
