United Way Offering $24K in Grants for New Projects

Aug. 25, 2004 – United Way of St. Thomas-St. John is making a total of $24,000 in venture grant funds available to support new projects to address community needs in the district.
Grants will be awarded to provide support over a limited time for the start-up and development by established not-for-profit agencies of "untried and unduplicated projects."
Such projects, according to a United Way release, might, as examples, address child abuse and neglect, child care and other services for disabled children, literacy, or services for the elderly and disabled adults.
Venture grants are not to be used for established programs or as start-up funding for new agencies.
In order to be eligible for the funding, a community organization must have Internal Revenue Service 501(c)(3) not-for-profit tax status, must have been in existence for at least two years and must want to start a new community outreach program or to expand an existing one.
Grant applications and letter of intent forms are available at the United Way offices in Suite 220 at Nisky Center. "Potential applicants are encouraged to submit a one-page letter of intent by Sept. 3," the release stated. "An informational session on the program and the application will be provided on Sept. 9."
Completed applications must be received by Oct. 8. For more information, call 774-3185.
