Police Plan to Meet with East End Residents

Sept. 3, 2004 — The Crime Prevention Bureau of the V.I. Police Department will host a community meeting for Red Hook and surrounding area residents at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Ivanna Eudora Kean High School auditorium.
Police Commissioner Elton Lewis and officers from the Crime Prevention Bureau will speak to the residents about establishing a Neighborhood Watch Program in their area. Residents will also be able to discuss ways of improving police service in their area.
Kenneth Blake, Crime Prevention Bureau director, said that the Police Department had previously held island-wide meetings on all three islands, but Lewis felt that going to the different communities was a better way to assess the needs of each particular community.
Only a handful of residents turned up at the town meeting held at Charlotte Amalie High School on Aug. 21, a Friday night.
Blake said the Red Hook meeting was, "Basically a way to hear the concerns of people in the community and to assist them in setting up the Neighborhood Watch Program."
Blake said the Neighborhood Watch Program is not a new thing to the territory. Estate Caret Bay and Water Island currently have Neighborhood Watch Programs in place.
"It's a tool that works for sure," Blake said. "It's just neighbors looking out for each other."
Blake encourages all residents to attend and bring a neighbor with them to the Wednesday meeting.
