Sept. 21, 2004 – Police on St. Croix are launching an investigation into a suspicious death Monday night on Campo Rico beach. A body was discovered in a burned-out vehicle around 11 p.m.
According to information released Tuesday afternoon by the Office of the Police Commissioner, a report was made through the 911 Emergency Service to V.I. Fire Services that a possible explosion and fire had occurred in the Campo Rico beach area.
"Units responded late Monday night and found a vehicle engulfed in flames on a dirt road leading to the beach. After extinguishing the flames, police officers who had arrived on the scene along with Fire Services personnel found a body slumped over in the front passenger seat that was burned beyond recognition. The interior and exterior of the vehicle suffered extensive damage as a result of the fire," the release said.
The badly burned body was removed from the vehicle and transported to the Juan F. Luis Hospital for further examination to determine gender and cause of death, the report said.
