L.P. Catering Gets the Okay to Reopen

Sept. 23, 2004 – Five days after it was shut down by government inspectors for various health violations, L.P. Catering has reopened. In a brief statement, faxed to the media on Wednesday, the company's Janet Brown said the catering business and the restaurant, located at the old L'escargot in Subbase has "just passed its environmental health inspection and has been cleared to re-open."
The company apologized for its closing. The owners of L.P. Catering also released to the public a copy of a Food Service Establishment Report from the Health Department, which indicates that it passed several components of its inspection on Wednesday. Health inspectors signed off as "OK" on sections of the report including: food protection, personnel, equipment and utensils, water, sewage, plumbing including drains, toilet and hand washing facilities, garbage disposal, insect and rodent control, floors, walls and ceilings as well as lighting and ventilation. An inspector had written across the form that the establishment is "cleared for reopening 09/22/04."
The inspector further wrote that "at the time of the inspection, no serious violations to include insect pests or rodents were observed. The establishment has cleared the standards of the Department of Health," the report continued, "owner advised to report to Environmental Health and take care of citations that were issued."
L.P. Catering, which not only operated a restaurant at No. 12 Subbase but also provided meals for the government's Meals on Wheels program and for the mentally ill at the Eldra Schulterbrandt healthcare facility, was shut down on Sept. 17 after inspectors found "repeated violations" of health standards. Darlene A. Carty, Health commissioner, had said on Tuesday that the Environmental Health Division had no choice but the order the shutdown after the violations were found repeatedly in inspections that dated back to August.
