Senate Rules Committee Recommends Nominations

Sept. 24, 2004 — The Senate Rules Committee, in a hearing on St. John Thursday, approved the nominations of Leon Battiste, Ramona Moss, Kenneth Damon and Oswin Sewer, reporting them with a favorable recommendation to the full Senate.
Battiste had been nominated to serve on the St. Thomas Horseracing Commission, Moss on the Board of Psychology Examiners, Damon on the V.I. Waste Management Authority, and Sewer on the V.I. Lottery Commission.
In his testimony to the committee, Battiste said he intends to help the government and horse owners in addressing the "difficult" problems faced by the horseracing industry and develop reforms to improve the horseracing product on St. Thomas, according to a release from the 25th Legislature.
Moss stated the importance of thoroughly checking practitioners' credentials before granting licenses, the release further stated.
Damon told the committee that his objective for the Waste Management Authority was the education of the public of the goals of the authority.
Sewer spoke of his plans to "revitalize" the V.I. Lottery and to develop its potential for bringing in more revenues for the territory.
In other action, the committee also voted to approve a bill sponsored by Sen. Almando "Rocky" Liburd that would update the V.I. Building Code, bringing it in conformity with the International Building Code.
Attending the hearing were: committee chair Roosevelt David, Sen. Lorraine Berry, Sen. Carlton Dowe, Sen. Ronald Russell and Sen. Louis Hill. Sen. Douglas Canton Jr. and Sen. David Jones were absent.
