Symposium on Haiti Set Feb. 4 for UVI's St. Thomas and St. Croix Campuses
UVI's Reichhold Center will sponsor a public symposium on Haiti, its revolution and current circumstances on Friday, Feb. 4. The symposium is scheduled in conjunction with a Virgin Islands performance by the Haitian musical group Strings on Feb. 5.
Participants in the free symposium will include UVI instructors Dr. Malik Sekou, Dr. Vincent Cooper, Gene Emanuel and Dr. Evelyn Lallemand. The symposium will originate at 7 p.m. in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on the St. Thomas campus. It will be videoconferenced to Evans Center Room 713 on the St. Croix campus and also to Teacher Education Room 101 on St. Thomas. For details contact the Reichhold Center at 693-1563.
St. Croix Humanities Film Society Presents 'La Vie Est Belle' on Feb. 4
The UVI Humanities Division Film Society will present the French film "La Vie Est Belle" at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 4, at the Theater (Evans Center Room 401) on the St. Croix Campus. "La Vie Est Belle," starring music legend Papa Wemba, takes viewers inside the vibrant music scene of Kinshasa, Zaire. In the lively farce, directors Ngangura Mweze and Benoit Lamy tell the story of a poor musician who seeks love, respect and fame in the big city. Demonstrating a different side of African cinema, the film runs approximately 85 minutes and features English subtitles. Admission is free and a discussion will follow the screening. VI-EPSCoR Spring Science Seminar Series Opens Feb. 7, 2005
Dr. Richard Nemeth, director of Marine and Environmental Studies at the University of the Virgin Islands, will open the Spring 2005 VI-EPSCoR Seminar Series of science lectures from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 8. Dr. Nemeth's presentation is titled "Linking larval history to juvenile demography in the bicolor damselfish (Stegastes partitus)." This paper was presented by Dr. Nemeth at the Association of Marine Labs of the Caribbean in Trinidad in 2003.
The lecture will originate in Chase Auditorium (Business Education Room 110) on UVI's St. Thomas campus and be videoconferenced to Evans Center Room 713 on the St. Croix campus. The 2005 EPSCoR lecture series, which is free and open to the public, will continue at noon on Tuesdays through April 26. In the lectures, UVI and visiting scientists present results from their original research. The series is hosted by UVI's Center for Marine and Environmental Studies, the Division of Science and Mathematics and the VI-Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) program. 'Year of Languages' Celebration Continues with Free Film on Feb. 9
The Humanities Division's Modern Languages Area on UVI's St. Thomas campus continues its celebration of "2005: The Year of Languages" with a showing of the Brazilian film "City of God" at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 9. The screening location remains to be announced. The film is free and open to the UVI community. A monthly series of activities is also being planned for the observance of the "Year of Languages." The next, titled "Love in any Language," will be an exploration of love and romance in many cultures. It is scheduled for 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 14, in the UVI Little Theatre, located in the CA Building on the St. Thomas campus. UVI's Upward Bound to Plan for 40th Anniversary Program
UVI's Upward Bound program will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2006. All Upward Bound alumni are invited to attend the first meetings of the 40th Anniversary Planning Committee. Meetings are scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 12, in the Cafetorium on the St. Croix campus and in the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. The agenda includes nominating committee officers and creating a directory of Upward Bound alumni. St. Croix Golden Key Chapter Wins Fundraising Challenge
UVI's St. Croix chapter of the Golden Key International Honour Society has won the overall chapter competition of the fall MBNA credit card fundraising challenge. MBNA sponsors Golden Key credit cards. The St. Croix campus chapter bested 55 other Golden Key Chapters to win $3.75 per application and a bonus of $500 – for a total award of $612.50 – for winning the competition. The Society's (www.goldenkey.org ) mission is to build global communities of academic achievers by providing opportunities for individual growth through leadership, career development, networking and service. St. Croix Associate Chancellor Completes Homeland Security Course
UVI's St. Croix campus Associate Chancellor Claude Steele has successfully completed the National Interagency Incident Management System (NIIMS) Incident Command System level 200 Basic Course presented at VITEMA on Jan. 19, 2005. This course was provided by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the United States Coast Guard. A certificate of completion was awarded. The Incident Command System is a management system. Information acquired from this training helps to sharpen management skills and better equip individuals to be fully effective incident or event managers. ICS has the flexibility and adaptability to be applied to a wide variety of incidents and events both small and large. For more information, contact Steele at 692-4181.
SBDC Offers Personnel Evaluations and Appraisals Seminar on St. Thomas
UVI's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is offering a seminar entitled "Personnel Evaluations and Appraisals" from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, Feb. 7, at the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. The presenter is University of the Virgin Islands Counseling Supervisor Verna Dawson-Rivers. The seminar is designed for entrepreneurs, potential entrepreneurs, employers and employees. It will focus on the basics of the performance evaluation and job appraisal process. Pre-registration is required. Admission is $20; with a $5 discount if the participant mentions where he or she learned about the seminar. For more information, call 776-3206.
