Two Overflowing Manholes Stinking Up St. Croix

Feb. 17, 2005 – Overflowing manholes are discharging raw sewage in Estate Humbug and near Cottages by the Sea in Frederiksted.
Commissioner Dean C. Plaskett, Department of Planning and Natural Resources, said Thursday the Division of Environmental Protection is investigating.
A press release from the DPNR said the manhole in Estate Humbug is located in the street in front of the pump station and has raw sewage flowing from it and pooling in the grassy area on the right shoulder of the road.
The release continues that the manhole at Cottages by the Sea is located at the entrance of the establishment. Raw sewage is flowing from the manhole, pooling on the dirt road and settling in the grassy area at the main entrance.
DPNR advises the public to avoid the areas around the overflowing manholes – especially children and adults with compromised immune systems. Standing or running water in these areas may contain contaminants or harmful pollutants
DPNR will continue to monitor the area. For information regarding Water Quality call the Division of Environmental Protection at 773-1082. For information regarding sewage over flows call Department of Public Works at 773-1290.
