UVI to Celebrate Charter Day with Activities

March 6, 2005 – The University of the Virgin Islands is celebrating the 43rd Charter Day with a week of special activities. The official Charter Day program, which commemorates the signing of legislation 43 years ago establishing the College and later the University of the Virgin Islands, will be from 9 to 11 a.m. March 16.
Activities, which are scheduled on both campuses, include walk-a-thons, alumni events, lectures on a wide variety of topics, a library display, and the 15th annual Intercollegiate Debates. All events are free, and the public is welcome.
The Charter Day program will be held in Chase Auditorium (room B110) on the St. Thomas campus and videoconferenced to the Theater (room EC401) on the St. Croix Campus. Other events with times and locations are listed here. Visit UVI's Web site for possible updates.
Tuesday, March 8
— 4 p.m. – Talk Radio: The Afternoon Mix on WVWI Radio One, 1000 AM. The topic will be "Charter Day – The Past" featuring guests Dr. Marilyn Krigger and Dr. Eustace Esdaille.

Wednesday, March 9
— 12:30 p.m. – Humanities lecture titled "Slaves, Animals and Slave Owners in Jorge Isaacs's Maria," by humanities professor Daniel D'Arpa. The lecture will be held in the Humanities Building, room 200, on the St. Thomas campus.
— 4 p.m. – Talk Radio: The Afternoon Mix on WVWI Radio One, 1000 AM. The topic will be "Charter Day – The Present" featuring guests Miss UVI Shakima Stout and UVI alumni.
— 8 p.m. – TV show: Face to Face on WTJX Channel 12.
Thursday, March 10
— 1 p.m. – Motivational speech, "You MUST Be Special," featuring Dr. Thomas Landefeld in the Theater, room EC401, on the St. Croix campus and Chase Auditorium, room B110, on the St. Thomas campus.

Friday, March 11
— 6 a.m. – Queen Mary 5K Walk/Run on St. Croix. The course starts at Kmart "West" and ends on the St. Croix campus.
— 9 a.m. – Intercollegiate Debates Opening Ceremony in the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. (Note: See the Source Feb. 10 article in Community/ Other section for more about the debates.)
— 10 a.m., Debate 1, "Environmental Activism Jeopardizes Growth and Progress"
— 1 p.m., Debate 2, "CARICOM Should Ostracize Haiti"
— 3 p.m., Debate 3, "International Lending Agencies Promote Economic Slavery in the Developing World"
— noon – "Reproduction: Mystery, Magic and Mayhem," by Dr. Thomas Landefeld in Evans Center Room 713 on the St. Croix campus and in the Chase Auditorium, room B110, on the St. Thomas campus.
— 5 p.m. – Softball Game on St. Thomas in the softball field next to the Sports and Fitness Center.
Saturday, March 12
— 2 p.m. – Talk Radio: UVI on the Air on WSTA 1340 AM. The topic will be "Charter Day – the Future."
— 6 p.m., 7 p.m., 8 p.m. – Intercollegiate Debates in the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. Semi Finals – "The 'Willy Lynch Legacy' Still Influences Caribbean Culture."
— 6 p.m. – Alumni Dinner Dance at Palms Court Harbourview.
Sunday, March 13
— 3 p.m., 4 p.m., 5 p.m. – Intercollegiate Debates in the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. Finals – "Peace is Not Possible in the Middle East."

Monday, March 14
— 10 a.m. – Business Alumni Day featuring professionals who have graduated from the UVI business program. The event will be held in the Business Building on the St. Thomas campus.
— 6 p.m. – Dr. Alfred O. Heath Distinguished Speaker's Forum featuring Dr. Compton Bourne, president of the Caribbean Development Bank. The forum will be held in the Chase Auditorium, room B110, on the St. Thomas campus and the Theater, room EC401, on the St. Croix campus.

Tuesday, March 15
— Noon – Humanities reading and lecture from the anthology "Seasoning for the Mortar," featuring UVI Professor Dr. Patricia Harkins-Pierre in the Classroom Administration Building room 303 on the St. Thomas campus.
— 1 p.m. – Distinguished Nurses Lecture Series featuring nursing professional Jean Davis Phaire in the Chase Auditorium, room B-110, on the St. Thomas campus and the Theater, EC401, on the St. Croix campus.
— 6 p.m. – Business Alumni Day featuring professionals who have graduated from the UVI business program. The event will be held in the Business Building on the St. Thomas campus.
— 7 p.m. – TV Show: I'll Take the Meeting on WJTX Channel 12. The topic will be "Charter Day: The Future" with guests UVI President Dr. LaVerne Ragster and Business Professor Dr. Eustace Esdaille.

Wednesday, March 16
— 9 a.m. – Charter Day Ceremony in the Chase Auditorium, room B-110, on the St. Thomas campus and the Theater, EC401, on the St. Croix campus. The ceremony will include a video presentation, poetry reading and remarks by Gov. Charles W. Turnbull and Dr. Ragster. Refreshments will be served following the ceremony.
— 11 a.m. – Writing Center Open House in the Modular Building – MB104 (between the cafeteria and the Greathouse) on the St. Croix campus.
Thursday, March 17
— 8 p.m. TV Show: Topics on WTJX Channel 12. The topic will be "UVI: A Proud Past, an Innovative Future."
March 8 – 19
— Charter Day Library Display in the Ralph M. Paiewonsky Library on the St. Thomas campus.
