Assault Investigation Now Homicide

March 8, 2005 – Police are still investigating the death of a 19-year-old male who was shot in the face and about the body while walking down a street with a friend in Old Tutu Feb. 24.
The victim, Khalid Antonio Gumbs of Oswald Harris Court, was found "laying in a pool of blood" and was taken to the Roy Lester Schneider Hospital, where he was placed on life support, Police spokesman Sgt. Thomas Hannah said Tuesday.
The investigation has been upgraded from the original first-degree assault to homicide because of Gumbs' death, Hannah said.
Gumbs' friend was unharmed in the incident. He later reported to police that he and Gumbs had been walking in the Old Tutu area when an armed man jumped out of the bushes and fired at them. Hannah said the suspect was wearing a white shirt and blue jeans at the time of the incident.
Hannah said police have received several leads since the incident occurred but cannot divulge that information to the public.
Funeral services for Gumbs will be held March 16 at the Memorial Moravian Church.
