Details of Newly Adopted UVI Compensation Plan Revealed
UVI President Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster held a meeting with UVI faculty and staff on Thursday, March 17, at which she revealed the details of a University compensation plan that was approved Saturday by the UVI Board of Trustees. A full news release is available on the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu.
Regalia Orders for St. Thomas Faculty and Staff Needed As Soon As Possible
UVI faculty and staff on the St. Thomas campus who need to rent regalia for the 2005 commencement should visit or contact the UVI Bookstore as soon as possible to place their orders. The Bookstore's phone number is 693-1561. UVI's Forty-first Annual Commencement Exercise on the St. Thomas campus is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 14 in the Sports & Fitness Center.
Spring Research Symposium Scheduled for March 19 on St. Croix
Approximately 25 UVI math and science students will present a Spring Research Symposium from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 19, at the Cafetorium on UVI's St. Croix campus. The students, who represent both UVI campuses, will present the results of summer research projects. St. Croix high school students, as well as the general public are invited to attend. St. Croix Spring Ball 2005 Scheduled March 19
The Student Government Association on UVI's St. Croix campus will present the 2005 Spring Ball at 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 19, in the Cafetorium. The ball's theme is "Roses and Champagne on the Red Carpet." Admission is $19.99 for singles and $35 for couples. Call 692-4188 for details.
March Issue of Dateline: UVI Now Available On Web Site
The March 2005 edition of the monthly newsletter Dateline: UVI is now available on the UVI web site. It features a story and photos of UVI Charter Week activities. Also included are stories on Aberra Bulbulla, who was named "Crop Farmer of the Year" at the 2005 Agriculture and Food Fair on St. Croix, and the UVI SHOP – Student Homeownership Opportunity Program. The newsletter is available from a link on the UVI home page – www.uvi.edu.
March 22 EPSCoR Lecture to Focus on Birds, People and Ecosystems
"Birds, People and Ecosystems: What's happening and what can we do?" is the topic of the next VI-EPSCoR Science Lecture. The session is scheduled for noon, on Tuesday, March 22 in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on UVI's St. Thomas campus, with a videoconference link to Evans Center room 713 on the St. Croix campus. The guest speaker will be Dr. Jim Corven, an associate professor of biology at UVI. The 2005 EPSCoR Science Lecture Series is free and open to the public. It continues at noon on Tuesdays through April 26. All lectures feature UVI or visiting scientists presenting results from their original research. The series is sponsored by the VI-Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) program. For more information, call 693-1380.
Colloquium to Explore Impact of Crime on V.I. Quality of Life Set March 19
A colloquium to discuss the impact of crime on the quality of life in the Virgin Islands is scheduled for 8 a.m. on Saturday, March 19, at UVI's Chase Auditorium (B-110) on St. Thomas, with a videoconference link to the Theatre (Evans Center room 401) on the St. Croix campus. The session will be co-sponsored by the Social Sciences Division and the Eastern Caribbean Center at UVI, and the V.I. Police Department.
Human development and the quality of life are inextricably linked, according to UVI Social Sciences Chair Dr. Malik Sekou. Designed as an informed discussion of crime, the colloquium will involve law enforcement professionals, scholars and community organizations that have a direct interest in crime prevention or that work with victims of crime. Issues to be discussed include the psychology of criminal behavior, juvenile offenders, crime data analysis, politics and police work, and the criminal justice system. St. Croix Campus Health Fair Scheduled March 22-24
The Annual Health Fair for 2005 will be held on UVI's St. Croix campus from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on March 22 through 24. The fair is designed to promote healthier living among UVI students, faculty and staff, as well as the general Virgin Islands community. Fair activities will include a blood drive, glucose testing, blood pressure checking, vision screening and an exercise/fitness class. Workshops are planned on mental health, general health, nutrition, herbal medicine and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). British Film Scheduled March 23 on St. Thomas Campus
"The Year of Languages" celebration continues with free foreign films each Wednesday at 9 p.m. in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on UVI's St. Thomas campus. UVI-CELL Relocates, Opens Training Center on St. Thomas Campus
The University of the Virgin Islands' Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVI-CELL) Center has relocated its offices on the St. Thomas Campus. The new CELL Center is located at Faculty East (old Merchants Market road). It houses the corporate offices as well as a new training center. The expanded facilities will allow CELL to consolidate all its operations under one roof and maximize efficiency. UVICELL asks the general public to bear with them during this transition period. UVI Student Organizes Stroke Fair Scheduled for April 11 at Schneider Hospital
University of the Virgin Islands senior nursing student Reba Williams has organized St. Thomas' first-ever Stroke Fair. The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, April 11, at Roy Lester Schneider Hospital. Participants will learn the signs, symptoms and risks of stroke. Strokes are medical emergencies that require immediate action. Medical specialists will be on hand at the fair to offer cholesterol and blood pressure screening. Teachers Invited to Join V.I. Writing Project's Third Summer Institute
Teachers who wish to develop their skills as writers and as teachers of writing are invited to apply to the Virgin Islands Writing Project's third Summer Institute. The program will be held on the St. Croix campus of the University of the Virgin Islands from June 15 through July 20, 2005. A stipend of $800 will be awarded to all participants, and housing, meals, and transportation will be provided for residents of St. Thomas and St. John. Teachers from all grade levels and subject areas are encouraged to apply. Symposium on Updating Orwell's '1984' Scheduled March 18
In conjunction with the upcoming UVI Theatre Fall production of George Orwell's "1984," the students in the Speech 465 – Communication in the 21st Century – class will present a symposium titled "Big Brother's Family Tree – Updating Orwell's '1984'" from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. on Friday, March 18. The symposium, which is open to the entire University community, will take place in the Little Theatre in the CA Building on UVI's St. Thomas campus. Big Brother to Dominate UVI's Spring Production of '1984'
George Orwell's classic novel "1984" will come alive this spring on the stage of UVI's Little Theatre on the St. Thomas campus. The Little Theatre's spring's play is scheduled for April 1 through 4. Dr. Rosary Harper of the UVI Humanities Department says the cast has been selected, but the play's most imposing character is one you will never see: Big Brother. Tickets go on sale March 14th at Dockside Bookstore, Nisky Pharmacy, UVI Bookstore, and the Humanities Building. General admission is $12. Students with ID are admitted for $6. UVI Offering Five-Week Study Abroad Summer Program in Valencia, Spain
UVI's Humanities Division is organizing a five-week summer study abroad program in Spain's third-largest city, Valencia. The trip is planned for May 14 to June 18, 2005. Students can earn UVI credits while learning about the Spanish language and way of life. Participants will live in the home of a Spanish host-family. Three meals a day, a bed and laundry are included. Two hours per day — Monday through Thursday — of classroom study are scheduled. The program is offered to students of UVI. And, with open enrollment, anyone can sign up. The group size is limited to 10, and individuals are encouraged to sign up soon. Instructors are asked to inform students of the opportunity.
