Sanny Eugene Takes Gold Medal at CARIFTA

March 28, 2005 – The V.I. Track and Field Federation announced Monday that Sanny Eugene of the St.Croix Educational Complex High School and the Jr. Barracudas Track Club won first place and the gold medal in the 800 meters at the XXXIV CARIFTA Championships in Tobago Sunday with a time of 2:12.75.
The performance is five seconds faster than her time last year at CARIFTA in Bermuda where she won the bronze medal in the under 17 age group category. This year she moved up to the under 20 category, which from all indications was a much stiffer competition, facing much older and experienced runners. Her hard-earned victory went down to the wire as she nipped Bobby Gaye-Wilkens of Jamiaca by just 2 2/100ths of a second at 2:12.98 and third place Trinidad and Tobago national star Kerticha John at 2:13.03.
Eugene’s time is a new Virgin Islands junior and open record, surpassing that of Iyiesyia Petrus’s 2:13.
The three-day competition ends Monday.
