A Young V.I. Artist Will Win Trip to D.C.

April 11, 2005 – The student who wins the V.I. section of the Congressional Art Competition — An Artistic Discovery — will have their art hung in Washington, D.C. and will travel, with a chaperone, to D.C. for a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The works by winners from each state and territory will hang in the U.S. Capitol building for a year.
"This national competition provides an excellent opportunity for our young visual artists to showcase their talent," Delegate Donna M. Christensen said in a news release.
The V.I. first-place winner will receive $150 from the V.I. Council on the Arts. The second place winner gets $100, and the third place winner, $75.
The competition is open to high school students across the territory. Tasida Kelch, special projects coordinator at the Council on the Arts, said Monday that if the students are 7th or 8th graders at a high school that includes those grades, they are also eligible.
She said that the deadline is May 6.
"Applications have been faxed to the schools," Kelch said.
Applications are available on St. Thomas and St. Croix at the Council on the Arts offices and Delegate Donna M. Christensen's offices.
The local competition will take place from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. May 20 at the Economic Development Commission office at 4 King St., Frederiksted. Kelch said that while St. Croix students "pop in," those from St. Thomas don't usually attend because they have to pay their own way between the islands.
Kelch said the trip to Washington for the June 14 ribbon-cutting ceremony includes airfare and accommodations for the local winner and chaperone.
"They have to pay for their own meals," Kelch said.
She said that while there is no theme, the art must be able to be framed.
Works may be in various mediums. They include paintings in oils, acrylic or watercolor. Drawings may be in pastels, colored pencil, charcoal, ink, or markers. Lithographs, silkscreen prints or block prints are acceptable. They may also be two-dimensional collages, mixed media, computer-generated art, or photographs.
Kelch said last year Andrea Finch of Good hope School won with her oil painting. The Council on the Arts on St. Thomas, office phone number is 774-5984; on St. Croix it is 773-3075.
The numbers for the delegate's office are 774-4408 on St. Thomas and 778-5900 on St. Croix.
