April 22, 2005 – A male resident of New Works is hospitalized and his female domestic partner was taken to the Criminal Investigation Bureau after she allegedly shot him several times Friday night.
The female suspect told police she grabbed a gun, after her partner had held it to her head and threatened to kill her, and used it to shoot the unidentified man.
Sgt. Thomas Hannah, police spokesman, said Friday night police were called to the scene of the shooting around 5 p.m. He said the man had been shot more than once, but did not know where.
Hannah could only say the man was hospitalized in stable condition, while the woman had been taken in for questioning. Neither had been charged with anything as of publication, but it is possible, he said, that both could be charged in the matter.
"The woman told us she had filed a previous police report of domestic violence," Hannah said. If that proves true, the woman could be released.
However, under the recently passed Omnibus Crime Bill, Hannah said there are stricter bail terms for domestic violence incidents where guns are involved. The woman, if charged with a crime, could be held without bail until she went before the judge.
"He [the unidentified man] could also be charged," Hannah said, "if they find a police report had been filed on a previous incident."
According to Hannah, prior to threatening her with the gun, the suspect said her partner had wielded a machete, saying, "this is for you."
