May 16, 2005 – The Governor Juan F. Luis Hospital and Medical Center last week celebrated National Hospital Week with a Walk-A-Thon, a picnic, a Crucian breakfast, a mini-health fair and education sessions, and there is still more to come.
The annual Hospital Ball is Saturday at the Divi Casino banquet room at 5:30 p.m. The ball is held in conjunction with the national week which this year has the theme "A Calling to Care."
Gregory Davila, hospital spokesmen, said he expected about 200 hospital employees, family members and general public to attend. Fifteen hospital retirees will be honored. The Digital Band will play for those wanting to dance. Tickets are $45 and can be obtained by calling 778-6311, ext. 2717.
Davila said that about 30 people took part in the Walk-A-Thon Saturday from the Cotton Valley Fire Station to Kramer Park for a picnic.
All the events of the week, except maybe the midnight snack of pizza for employees and the Crucian breakfast at the cafeteria last Wednesday, were centered around healthy lifestyles.
The health fair on Tuesday gave the residents the opportunity for free screenings of blood sugar level, HIV, and blood pressure. There were also three education sessions – Good Health in One Package, Colon Cancer Screening, and Menopause Update.
Also, as part of the celebration, the hospital announced the winners of its Cardiac Center logo contest. In the school category, the winners were First – Javon Knighton, St. Croix Central High School; Second – Flavia Crovesi, Country Day School; and Third – Kristen Frye, Manor School.
Winners in the hospital employee category were, First – Glenda Johnson, RN – operating room; Second – Collin Quailey, RN – intensive care unit; and Third – Maria I. Santiago, radiology department.
Winners in the general public category were, First – Joan Szatkowski-Henderson; Second – Maria A. Christian; and Third – Anthony D. Lee.
Szatkowski-Henderson was then chosen as overall winner. She received a $500 check for that and a round trip ticket to Puerto Rico for winning her category.
Knighton received a $250 gift certificate at the Education Center for winning the school category and Glenda Johnson won a $250 check for winning the employee category. The second and third place finishers picked up trophies.
