Military News of Virgin Islanders – May 2005

Air Force Senior Airman Monique George/St.Thomas
May 6, 2005 (Army & Air Force Hometown News) – Air Force Senior Airman Monique George is currently deployed to Southwest Asia in the Persian Gulf region to support the mission of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The soldier is a member of the 325th Fighter Wing, Tyndall Air Force Base, Panama City, Fla.
Operation Iraqi Freedom is the official name given to military operations involving members of the U.S. armed forces and coalition forces participating in efforts to free and secure Iraq. Mission objectives focus on force protection, peacekeeping, stabilization, security, and counter-insurgency operations as the Iraqi transitional governing bodies assume full sovereign powers to govern the peoples of Iraq.
Members from all branches of the U.S. military and multinational forces are also assisting in rebuilding Iraq's economic and governmental infrastructure, and training and preparing Iraqi military and security forces to assume full authority and responsibility in defending and preserving Iraq's sovereignty and independence as a democracy.
George, a senior emergency actions controller, is the daughter of Theodora Creque-Smith of Bournefield, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.
She is a 2001 graduate of Charlotte Amalie High School, St. Thomas.

Army Spec. Jay E. Jacobs/St.Thomas
May 6, 2005 (Army & Air Force Hometown News) – Army Spec. Jay E. Jacobs has deployed to Iraq to support the mission of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Jacobs is an Abrams tank system maintainer who is normally assigned to the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Irwin, Barstow, Calif.
He is the son of Barbara and George E. Jacobs of Queen St., Christiansted, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Navy Hospitalman Apprentice Frank T. Petersen/St. Croix
May 17, 2005 (Fleet Hometown News Center) – Navy Hospitalman Apprentice Frank T. Petersen, son of Judy G. and Antonio Petersen of Kingshill, V. I., recently graduated from the Basic Hospital Corps School at Naval Hospital Corps School, Great Lakes, Ill.
During the 14-week course, Petersen learned a wide range of medical procedures used to provide first aid and assist Navy doctors and nurses. Petersen also received an introductory instruction for service in a variety of medical environments, from fleet hospitals and shipboard medical departments to fleet Marine forces and medical administration offices.
Petersen's newly acquired skills and knowledge will enable him to help provide quality health care to Navy and Marine Corps personnel and their families. His first assignment after school will involve direct patient care, but with his training, he can work in several areas, including first aid, assisting with minor surgery, pharmacy and laboratory analysis, patient transportation, and food service inspections.
Petersen is a 2003 graduate of Saint Croix Educational Complex of Frederiksted, V. I. and joined the Navy in November 2004.

Nicholas J. Dunn Enlisted in U.S. Navy Program
May 18, 2005 (Fleet Hometown News Center) – Civilian Nicholas J. Dunn, son of Carolyn B. Dunn of Marietta, Ohio and Don J. Dunn of Christiansted, V. I., recently enlisted in the U.S. Navy under the Delayed Entry Program at Navy Recruiting District Miami, Sunrise, Fla.
The program allows recruits to enter the Navy and take up to one year to complete prior commitments, such as high school. Using recruiters as mentors, this program helps recruits ease into the transition from civilian to military life.
Dunn will report for active duty to undergo basic training at the Navy Recruit Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill. Dunn is completing his senior year at Marietta High School.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Robert J. Joseph
May 19, 2005 (Fleet Hometown News Center) – Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Robert J. Joseph, son of Robert A. Joseph of St. Croix, V. I., recently graduated from the Basic Hospital Corps School at Naval Hospital Corps School, Great Lakes, Ill.

Army Specialist Shawn O. Dawson/St. John
May 20, 2005 (Army & Air Force Hometown News) – Army Spec. Shawn O. Dawson has graduated from the Ammunition Specialist Advanced Individual Training course at Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Ala.
The course is designed to train soldiers to assist in receipt, storage, issue, maintenance, modification, destruction and demilitarization of conventional ammunition, munitions and explosive components. These must all be done according to technical and safety directives. Shawn has learned to perform ammunition supply stock control and accounting duties using automated and manual procedures. He has also been taught to operate material handling equipment to maneuver ammunition.
Shawn is the son of Rubina D. Glendinen of Lind Point, St. John, Virgin Islands.

Army Pvt. Gary J. Eloi/St. Thomas
May 25, 2005 (Army & Air Force Hometown News) – Army Pvt. Gary J. Eloi has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. During the eight weeks of training, he received instruction in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, Army history, core values and traditions.
Additional training included development of basic combat skills, battlefield operations and tactics, and the various weapons and weapons defenses that are available to the infantry crewmen.
Eloi is the son of Reynold Eloi of Frydendahl, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.
He is a 2004 graduate of Ivanna Eudora Kean High School, St. Thomas.
