Talented Teen Competition Set for Sunday Night

May 24, 2005 — The 33rd annual Hal Jackson's Virgin Islands Talented Teen competition will be held at 8 p.m on Sunday at the St. Croix Educational Complex Auditorium.
This year's competition will feature seven young women from the Virgin Islands, four from St. Croix and three from St. Thomas. According to the competition's director, Claire Roker, this event promises to be an exciting one.
"The girls are all very talented, we will have six dancers and one singer in this year's competition," Roker said.
According to Roker, the competition was developed by Hal Jackson, who is a pioneer in the broadcasting field, and has worked to help many people in the media arena. "He started the competition because he saw an opportunity for young women to express themselves through the arts," she said. Jackson currently resides in New York City and has expanded his franchise of Talent Unlimited throughout the world.
In order to compete in the competition the young women must meet a number of requirements. They must be between the ages of 13-17, have a grade point average of at least a 2.5, and have a performing talent. Roker said, "The girls must be outgoing, personable, and friendly."
Roker has directed the local competition for the past 33 years. Roker said that through this competition she hopes to build the girls' self confidence, and would like the girls to gain the ability to deal with competition. Roker said that the contestants, although from different islands, are able to socialize with each other. They have attended workshops and are encouraged to volunteer in their communities.
"The winner of this event will gain a $1,500 scholarship, and become a goodwill ambassador representing the territory," Roker said. She continued to say that there would also be other prizes for the winners and the runners-up.
