UVI Board of Trustees to Meet June 25
The University of the Virgin Islands Board of Trustees will meet at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 25, in the Research and Extension Center on UVI's St. Croix campus. The meeting will convene with regular session agenda items beginning with the president's report, which will include highlights of major University accomplishments since the previous board meeting. St. Thomas Class of 2005 Yearbooks Available
Yearbooks for the University of the Virgin Islands St. Thomas campus Class of 2005 are available. Individuals interested in purchasing a copy of the yearbook or who reserved their copy in advance should call Class President Anne Auguste or Yearbook Chairman Marcus Browne to arrange for pickup. The full-color year book costs $40 per copy. To purchase a book or to arrange for pickup, call Auguste at 643-2175 or Browne at 643-7637. Individuals who made deposits on the 2004 yearbook are asked to call the Student Activities office at 693-1111 to make arrangements for picking up their refunds.
UVI Community Encouraged to Support 2005 Relay for Life Team
The UVI Community is encouraged to support the University's 2005 Relay for Life team in this weekend's fund raising event for St. Thomas/St. John Chapter of the American Cancer Society. UVI's 15-person team will walk the Charlotte Amalie High School track in relay-style for the duration of the event. Each member is expected to raise a minimum of $110. Supporters are encouraged to make financial contributions toward each team member's total. The UVI Community is also encouraged to turn out at the event — which begins at 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 25, and continues through noon on Sunday, June 26 — at the Charlotte Amalie High School track. Attendees pay $10 for admission and receive an event tee shirt. The event's Luminary which commemorates individual cancer patients, survivors and those who have succumbed to the disease, is scheduled from 9 to 10 p.m. Family style entertainment and activities will take place throughout the Relay. Summer Academy Provides 25 V.I. Students with Head Start on Health Careers
Twenty-five Virgin Islands students in grades 10 through 12 are participating in a six-week Summer Science Enrichment Academy that focuses on careers in the health industry on UVI's St. Thomas campus. Classes for the students, who are living on campus, began today (Monday, June 20) and continue through July 29. The students – 19 girls and six boys representing nine different schools – will take classes in chemistry, biology, math, English and learning strategies. They will also participate in field trips and attend guest presentations and career panels. The goal is to enhance the science and math skills of college-bound students. The students will present posters representing their research on June 28. Students receive a stipend which covers program tuition and room and board. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Health Careers and Opportunity Program.
Foundation for UVI Celebrity Golf Classic Set July 14-17
The Foundation for the University of the Virgin Islands will host its first Celebrity Golf Classic from July 14 through July 17, 2005, at the Carambola Golf and Beach Resort on St. Croix. Celebrities from the National Football League, the National Basketball Association and the entertainment industry are expected to participate in this star-studded event in support of the Foundation's endowment. St. Croix to Celebrate Mango Melee and Tropical Fruit Festival
The annual St. Croix Mango Melee and Tropical Fruit Festival will be held from noon until 6:30 p.m. on Monday, July 4, 2005, at the St. George Village Botanical Garden on St. Croix. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children ages six to 12. Children under five will be admitted free. A news release is available on the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu.
