June 24, 2005 – Senator Celestino A. White Sr. wishes to remind veterans in the territory interested in housing at the new Veteran Center at the former Virgin Isles Hotel to call 776-7723 for information regarding eligibility and to register their names for application once available. Since our first press release a few weeks ago, 72 calls have been received of which only 13 have identified themselves as veterans. The voice mail system is now working properly and veterans are urged to call and register their names for an application, according to Sen. White.
"The Community Housing Corporation and Veterans Resource and Development Co. are partners in the development of the 151 apartment home community, which is now expected to be ready for occupancy from November 2005 through April 2006. I have requested that community outreach initiatives be implemented immediately to ensure that all those that are fully qualified to reside at the new veteran community will be made aware of the housing opportunity that will be available to them," stated Sen. White.
"Veterans have been identified as a population that is very much in need of affordable housing and every effort would be made to conduct outreach of members of organizations that represent veterans to insure that they are offered the opportunity to submit application. Additionally, veterans should be aware that under federal guidelines that govern the low-income housing tax credit program applications can not be accepted and processed until 90 days prior to the first expected occupancy, which is now expected for late November 2005," the senator said.
"I am encouraging all veterans in the Territory who may be income eligible to call 776-7723 to request an application. Please feel free to come in or call my office for additional information," he concluded.
